To get specific, we had a Cisco 7206VXR NPE400 to handle 256k which we bought for around £13k around 6-7 years ago. Last month we bought a Cisco 7606 with a RSP720 to handle the 1m+ mark. Cost us £10k. That's my cards on the table. I would say the counter argument to this is that the cost of routing reduces over time, obviously not in line with say Moore's law but to look at the prices of a router that can handle a full ipv4 table compared to 5 years ago, the cost difference is drastically lower.
Is that so? We paid significantly more for the box that handles 1 million FIB entries as opposed to the box that handles 256k entries.
