EU Commission publishes 'Declaration on European Digital Rights and Principles'
Dear colleagues, We noted last year the work going on in various quarters to develop “digital principles”. I wanted to draw your attention to the recent publication of a European Commission proposal for a 'Declaration on European Digital Rights and Principles’: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/declaration-european-digita... We previously shared the RIPE NCC’s response to an earlier EU consultation regarding this declaration: https://www.ripe.net/participate/internet-governance/multi-stakeholder-engag... While the suggestion we made there (to include a high-level commitment to maintaining a globally interoperable, unfragmented Internet) is not reflected in the new draft, we’ll certainly continue to follow this process and ensure the engagement of the RIPE community. With that in mind, we’d be very interested to hear any feedback or reactions to this new draft from the Commission. Best regards, Chris
Chris & all: maybe not as directly concerning to the RIPE community as "a globally interoperable, unfragmented Internet" might be, the right to encryption appears to unfortunately be only vaguely stated - one of the concerns MEP Patrick Breyer has already clearly voiced in his review. cf. EU-Kommission: Europäische Erklärung für digitale Rechte vorgelegt https://www.golem.de/news/eu-kommission-europaeische-erklaerung-fuer-digital... (German only - use your preferred translation tool to at least get the idea) Best, -C. On 26.01.2022 17:40, Chris Buckridge wrote:
