Or did I miss something? Artur, many thanks for your help. I think it's necessary to explain our procedure. When we receive a domain form (domain registration template) we check the primary nameserver (we use the first "nameserver:" tag to locate it). How to find otherwise that server without a nameserver tag? If the primary nameserver is reachable and properly configured we continue checking secondary nameservers which should be listed in the domain form and as NS records in the primary nameserver. The above is a useful check because many times there are discrepancies in what is "declared" and what is actually configured. In addition, if in the domain form there is our nameserver listed as a secondary, we also check the refresh time, retry time, expiration period and default ttl. Only after a successful check the domain object is added to database and the country master server is reloaded with the new information. Do you mean, you first build the domain object, insert it into the database and then get a list of nameservers out of it, in order to do your querying? And only then you consider the domain configuration ok? If this is the case, why don't you get the NS list from the (soon to be) primary nameserver, and if all is ok then you register the domain itself and the domain object in the database? Or did I miss something? We do this before registering a domain under PT... .artur

To be concise, we believe obsoleting the I don't want to assess the technical merits of any decisions taken at the DNS-WG, however I'm worried about the organizational merits of any decisions that were taken in WG meetings that had to compete against the Routing-WG and the RIPE-81++ discussions. I for my part did certainly not feel having quorum in the DB-WG, and thus no decisions were taken this time. I'm also going to state this is my minutes... Dear all, Blasco has informed us about the proposals and the decision taken during the last Ripe meeting. While we found all greats, we disagree about a particular proposal made at the dns working group. To be concise, we believe obsoleting the rev-srv and nameserver flags from the inetnum and domain objects to not be a meaningful action. Concerning the assumption of dns-wg about the useless of those tags and the absence of procedures based on them we would like to inform you that we are presently testing some automatic tools based exactly on those tags which we use before actually registering a new direct or inverse domain. Starting from the contained information, each server is queried on properly resolving the query. classless range notation

Dear folks, In a draft document sent out last week on representations of IP addresses in the RIPE database there was an invention by us, the classless range. This was in addition to the various notations used in the database currently, and the various classless notations. In the database working group at the RIPE meeting (with small attendance, since the routing working group met at the same time) there were some different ideas on the classless range notation. Some said we should simply use prefix/length notation also for assignments, but this does not allow non bit-aligned blocks registered as one in the database, others suggested some other notations. What I would like to get a feel of is whether you feel that we should allow for a representation that can contain non bit-aligned blocks, and if so how this should be represented in the inetnum object. I would like some discussion and preferably proposals and work from there. This will need to be implemented some day, and also the document should be finalized at some stage, preferably at the same time ripe-81++ is finalized. -Marten PS If you have not seen the document, it is available as: ftp.ripe.net:ripe/drafts/ripe-clarep.{ps,txt} General comments are also welcme, although it seemed that the classless range notation needs some discussion.

Classless Registry Drafts

Dear colleagues, we have prepared three draft documents describing how support for classless addresses can be added to the RIPE database. At the same time we propose a clear split between the allocation registry and the routing registry functions of the database. The allocation registry holds information about address space assignments done by Internet registries, while the routing registry holds information about routing policies and is largely maintained by the service providers. The three documents each describe one part of this new database. ripe-81++ - routing registry ripe-inetnum - allocation registry ripe-clarep - representation of classless addresses ripe-81++ is the longest document of the three. It describes the routing registry part of the database. It is a direct descendant of ripe-81. There are major changes as required by the separation of allocation and routing information. Also there is now support for classless routes and hence CIDR aggregation. It is also now possible to describe multiple ASes originating the same route. ripe-inetnum describes the changed inetnum object which is basically stripped of all routing and obsoleted attributes. ripe-inetnum also describes the person object and thus constitutes a complete reference for the allocation registry. ripe-clarep describes the representation of classless addresses in the RIPE database and thus in both the routing and the allocation registry. As these proposals are relevant to all three working groups addressed, we would appreciate if they could be discussed at the upcoming meeting and if at all possible consensus reached at least about the general design behind them. We need to make the registries classless as soon as possible and it will take some time to do the implementation. The documents can be found in ftp.ripe.net:ripe/drafts/<name>.{ps,txt}.
