Creation of out of region ROUTE(6) objects
Colleagues We are now approaching the implementation stage for managing the existing out of region ROUTE(6) objects in the RIPE Database (NWI-5). A question has been asked about the creation of new ROUTE(6) objects in the RIPE Database relating to non RIPE address space. This will still be technically possible after implementation of the solution for NWI-5. The question we now need to answer is...Do we want to allow the creation of new ROUTE(6) objects in the RIPE Database for non RIPE address space? Over the years this issue has been debated within this community there have been arguments made for and against this situation. The case against doing this is well known now. If anyone believes there is still a case for allowing these object creations (either for any address space or for some section of the global address space) then can you please make your case now. We would like to wrap up this whole issue with a clear consensus from the community. cheersdenisco-chair DB WG

I would prefer not. Nick

I agree, ultimately doesn't belong in the RIPE database. However I'd like to ensure there is a comprehensive path towardst that goal. I can think of a number of steps to get there. - mark out-of-region objects as being out-of-region - present warnings to the user when out-of-region objects are created - block inserting new out-of-region objects - try to reach out to stakeholders of out-of-region route objects - delete objects which also exist in other databases - delete objects which are not visible in the DFZ - ... It'll be a lengthy road, but it can be done. Kind regards, Job

If you do then I suggest that you make sure that they are created by the owners of the AS and not some arbritary third party please. Also please check that there are no conflicting route registry objects in the local registry route d/b. I suggest that you should not, although I do think that if anyone uses your whois / RIPE https://stat.ripe.net/37708#tabId=database that similarly to showing the RIPE route object, also show any route objects extracted from the other RIR route registries. hth Alan -- Alan Levin ---------------------------------- +27 21 4882820 (ddi)
