Sorry. I know this is probably an faq and a dumb question, but can some kind soul tell me the exact procedure for creating a new RIPE mntner object? Does one already have to be a dues-paying member of RIPE NCC in order to do that? Where is the form that needs to be filled out and what if any supporting documentation must be provided? Birth certificate? Company incorporation documents?
Hi Ronald Anyone can create a MNTNER object in the RIPE Database. If you don't have any data in there yet then you need to use the 'Create maintainer and person pair' tool to create a first MNMTNER/PERSON pair of objects: https://apps.db.ripe.net/db-web-ui/#/webupdates/select You need to set up a RIPE Access account to do this, but anyone can do that. I will point out that according to the Terms & Conditions for using the RIPE Database you should have a legitimate purpose for creating data in the database. cheers denis On 20/11/2016 22:10, Ronald F. Thanks. Seriously. I didn't know any of this.

Hehe. I know at least a half dozen lawyers who, if adequately compensated, could argue eloquently about the meaning of the word "legitimate" in this context, at least until the Second Coming, or quite possibly beyond. (I do believe however that it would probably be somewhat difficult to defend if, for example, someone popped up and openly admitted that "Yes, I created a new MNTNER object in order to make it easier for me to hijack other people's IP space.") But returning to the point, so if I have understood you correctly, there is nothing materially preventing some arbitrary baboon (who has sufficiently developed typing skills) from creating a RIPE MNTNER object and then proceeding on to create a number of arbitrary ROUTE objects (i.e. for out-of-region IP space) which themselves are declared to be maintained by that MNTNER object, correct? And am I to understand also that when and if such an event were to come to pass, no notices of this event would be emailed or otherwise transmitted -either- (a) to the registrant of the IP space involved -nor- (b) to the registrant of the ASN involved? Thanks again for your answers to my questions. This is all really quite enlightening. Regards, rfg
