Country attribute to be removed?
From the RIPE 48 minutes provided by Nick Hyrka:
DATABASE WORKING GROUP
- It was agreed that the 'country:' attribute should be either removed or be optional.
I was not at the meeting but reading over the PDF: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-48/presentations/ripe48-db-country.pd... I believe the consensus in db-wg was to add a ZZ code and *not* to drop the country attribute totally. Israel uses the country attribute to filter ISP prefixes at its IIX: http://www.isoc.org.il/fr_reload.html?iix/2x_tech.4 When was it agreed to have it removed? -Hank

It seems I missed something. We on IRCnet use IP ranges from RIPE DB to decide who to allow to log on our servers (someone already made automatic import script) Using DNS for this reason is VERY unreliable. I agree that some data in RIPE db are incorrect, but dropping country attribute or making it optional is imho not way to go. Proposed solution 3 is imho the right way. And for users (which will now knot what do codes mean) a link to ISO3166 codes might be filled in country: SK # see ISO3166 for more information about country codes) -- Matus UHLAR - fantomas, uhlar@fantomas.sk ; http://www.fantomas.sk/ Warning: I wish NOT to receive e-mail advertising to this address. Using ZZ was my preference in my presentation. However, during the discusion that took place after the presentation, the WG in the room agreed that the 'country:' attribute should be either removed or be optional. Regards, -engin -- Engin Gunduz RIPE NCC Software Engineering Department

Can we have a list of who was in attendance, and how many people voted in favor of removing the country attribute and whether people realized that the country attribute is used by organizations? And what is the rule on consensus - does attendance at the RIPE conference have more weight than discussion in the online mailing list? -Hank
