I'm probably posting far too late about this, but: Much as I agree that the default removal of email addresses from the whois output is a good idea, the lack of a changed: field is very annoying. Its always good to know how out of date an object is - and one of the key parameters I've used to decide if the details in an object are likely to be correct (i.e. are they actively maintained). Any chance of having changed: with a date (not an email address) back in the default output? Regards James

well, I had to sleep over the latest changes as well :-)

What I think is more annoying is to use a different query when updating/deleting objects in the DB. Nevertheless I understand the aim of the change and I definitly *do* support the effort to lead people to more meaningful abuse addresses, but it makes the LIR's daily business more difficult. And, beside that, I guess that when the -B switch becomes known to the public the previous behaviour will take place again and complaints will be send to all addresses again. Especially when some abuse mailboxes don't handle complaints in the desired way. But I'm afraid there's no way between the two options... All you have to do is add a -B to the whois query, and you get the complete output again: whois -h whois.ripe.net -- -B -r 212.13.195/24

I hope not. Cheers Hendrik -- Hendrik T. Voelker HTV5-RIPE MCI EMEA Registrar Team MCI Deutschland GmbH Sebrathweg 20 44149 Dortmund, GERMANY http://www.mci.com/de/ tel+49-231-972-1565 fax+49-231-972-1180

Can you say why you hope not? I'm curious to the arguements why this would be a bad thing. Regards James

If you're suggesting that the default method for displaying the 'changed' attribute should be something like changed: (e-mail-not-revealed) 20030929 rather than changed: hostmaster@ripe.net 20030929 I don't see any reason to "hope not", although this was actually my first reaction too, just like Hendrik Voelker. So, FMPOV, no "bad thing". OTOH, since -B gives full detail, I'm wondering about the arguments in favour of committing resources to its implementation. Is it such an outstandingly "good thing"? /Niall
