Yet surprisingly few women participate in it: rates of involvement by technologically skilled women are drastically lower in hacking communities than in industry and academia. Hacking Diversity investigates the activists engaged in free and open-source software to understand why, despite their efforts, they fail to achieve the diversity that their ideals support. Christina Dunbar-Hester shows that within this well-meaning volunteer world, beyond the sway of human resource departments and equal opportunity legislation, members of underrepresented groups face unique challenges. She brings together more than five years of firsthand research: attending software conferences and training events, working on message boards and listservs, and frequenting North American hackerspaces. She explores who participates in voluntaristic technology cultures, to what ends, and with what consequences. Digging deep into the fundamental assumptions underpinning STEM-oriented societies, Dunbar-Hester demonstrates that while the preferred solutions of tech enthusiasts—their “hacks” of projects and cultures—can ameliorate some of the “bugs” within their own communities, these methods come up short for issues of unequal social and economic power. Distributing “diversity” in technical production is not equal to generating justice. Hacking Diversity reframes questions of diversity advocacy to consider what interventions might appropriately broaden inclusion and participation in the hacking world and beyond. RIPE Code of Conduct - Call for volunteers

Dear colleagues, The Diversity Task Force has put a lot of work into updating the current RIPE Code of Conduct. They put together a series of draft documents that were then reviewed by the community. The most recent version 3.0 can be found here: https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/ripe-meetings/ripe-meeting-code-o… During the RIPE 80 community plenary, Hans Petter Holen described what he views as the best way forward to finalize the updated RIPE Code of Conduct and we would like to follow the process he laid out during his presentation. The main idea is to split the current draft document into three individual documents and to review each of them separately: 1. The Code of Conduct 2. The selection of the Trusted Contacts or Code of Conduct team 3. Procedures for the team We are now looking for volunteers to finalize this set of documents. During RIPE 80 three community members already offered their help. If you are still interested, please let us know. This of course also applies to anyone who would like to help and has not yet put their name forward. After interviewing all nominees, hearing substantial input from the community and a thorough discussion during three selection meetings all voting members voted to select Mirjam as Chair and eight out of ten voting members voted to select Niall as Vice Chair. The selection was subsequently supported unanimously by all members of the committee. We closely followed the process spelled out in ripe-727 and ripe-728. We regularly paused to confirm that the whole committee was comfortable with the process and its progress. We were able to choose from a set of nominees who are all very capable and well respected in the community. We expect that the community would support any of them as their Chair. Our selection is in no way a negative statement about the nominees we did not select. We selected Mirjam because the input from the community clearly favoured her. She is very widely regarded as someone who listens carefully to everyone and who helps the community to find consensus and move forward. We selected Niall because of the positive input we received about his track record with the community. Mirjam and Niall convinced us that they would work well as a team and complement each other. The RIPE NCC board has confirmed the candidates in accordance with the process set out in ripe-727. The original time line called for a transition from Hans Petter to Mirjam and Niall during RIPE 81 in October. Hans Petter has since resigned as RIPE Chair because he accepted to be the new managing director of the RIPE NCC; he is currently also serving as RIPE Chair ad-interim. In this situation it makes little sense to stick to the original time line. Therefore we suggest that the outgoing and incoming Chairs arrange the transition among themselves as soon as practicable. We plan to publish the NomCom report about this first run of the selection process in September before our term ends at RIPE 81. We expect to make suggestions for improving the process and look forward to the community discussing and deciding the process for the next iteration. We thank everyone who supported the NomCom, especially all nominees and the many members of the community who made time to give us their input. Dear all, personally, I have been privileged to ease through this pandemic (for now) and to overcome the multiple crisis-es unfolding on all the levels: health scare, childcare during lockdown, remote work, no visits to friends & relatives... while other, less fortunate people had it worse.
