i think we all agree that, if X can not receive mail directly, there should be an MX for X pointing to an SMTP server.
the point is that, if X runs an SMTP server, then there is no need for an MX for X.
There is a need if you want to provide failsafe SMTP service. No MX records, no fallback mailer (like "no hands, no cookies")... Elmi.
