Dear colleagues, Join the next RIPE NCC hackathon focused on Green Tech this December! Our goals are to develop tools, policies and protocols to reduce the environmental impact of Internet infrastructure. RIPE NCC hackathons are non-commercial and non-competitive. We focus on cooperation and openness - all the code produced is FLOSS, and all the results are published on public software repositories, wikis, and on blogs to help others further create, experiment, and develop ideas and tools. During 2002-3, around the time Freifunk (DE CWN) was forming, a group of early open wifi activists from London & Berlin came together to exchange knowledge and experience in building and establishing Community Wireless Networks. A simple document, thePicoPeering Agreement <http://www.picopeer.net/>, was co-authored to clearly state expectations and obligations in participating in such community networks and to facilitate further wider connectivity. Today, Freifunk and many community networks around the world use the PicoPeering Agreement as a foundational document for their activities. On Friday May 17 & Saturday May 18 many of the original geeks, activists and artists along with other interested people are meeting in Berlin once again, to reflect and celebrate the past, examine and question the document in the context of the present, and discuss future improvements and possibilities. We invite all interested picopeers and friends to come and participate in this event. - When: Sat 18 May, from 11:00 CEST until late in the evening - Where: Rooftop above c-base, Rungestraße 20, 10179 Berlin - Remote:https://jitsi.c-base.org/PicoPeers (both days) The majority of the talks, discussions and remote video links to the Battlemesh conference and other community network activists will be be streamed on Saturday May 18 from about 12:00 onwards. There will be a BBQ too. All are welcome to attend. RIPE87 Local Hubs & IETF 118 hackathon in Prague

Hi all, especially 10 new subscribers that were lost in moderator's queue ;-) There will be no hackathon next to RIPE87 in Rome - however - we are testing a different way to engage in a decentralised ways: Local Hubs! https://ripe87.ripe.net/attend/call-for-local-hubs/ If you are planning to remotely participate in the RIPE meeting, you could organise a group to do it together, and then invite more locals to have discussions IRL, and strengthen the local communities! Possible locations can be universities, hackerspaces, co-working place, data-center, someone's office... I've had positive experiences with Local Hubs in (quantum internet) hackathons, Wikimedia, CCC & "Computing within Limits" conferences... now I am looking forward to try it out with RIPE community. Hi, the IETF112 has a (virtual) hackathon coming up: 1-5 November 2021 https://trac.ietf.org/trac/ietf/meeting/wiki/112hackathon At the same time, there's an interesting discussion going on , on their list: someone suggested a project on e-tax & APIs... Some people complained that the project is: - maybe not relevant - maybe too political - maybe not technical enough ... Today, it is a crucial part of everyone’s daily life. People use the Internet for their social life, for their daily jobs, for routine shopping, and for keeping up with major events. An increasing number of people can access a Gigabit connection, which would be hard to imagine a decade ago. And, thanks to improvements in security, people trust the Internet for both planning their finances and for everyday payments. At the same time, some aspects of end-user experience have not improved as much... The IAB is holding this workshop to convene interested researchers, network operators, and Internet technologists to share their experiences and to collaborate on the steps needed to define properties and metrics with the goal of improving Internet access for all users. Interested participants are invited to submit position papers on the workshop questions. Paper size is not limited, but brevity is encouraged. Hi all, as you (maybe) know, RIPE NCC is giving moneyz to (mostly) FLOSS projects every year: ripe.net/cpf Who gets the funding is decided by the volunteers from the RIPE community, who form the selection committee. Each member has committed to serving a minimum term of one year (and a maximum of three) to ensure continuity. **Call for Selection Committee Members 2021** https://www.ripe.net/support/cpf/selection-committee Do you have a keen eye for emerging talents and innovative ideas? Would you like to shape the development of projects that will help the technical community? We are currently looking to fill two open slots on the selection committee. Committee members will need to serve terms of between one to three years and review applications from early August until late October of each year of their term. If you are interested in volunteering your time to serve on the selection committee, please submit your application before 31 March 2021.
