IPv6 mobile deployment (was: Why did the Google IPv6 statistics dropped for the, Netherlands?)
Hi, May I ask a different, but related question: While IPv6 migration on classic networks (server farms, internet-at-home connections) is ongoing (and has been ongoing for many, many years, alas), we don't seem to make any progress with mobile data networks. My phone shows test-ipv6.com 10/10 when connected to my home wifi, when I connect via my mobile provider, I only get IPv4/CGN. For me, this has been the case for quite a while, with multiple providers. "Mobile" is important for IPv6 migration. Without IPv6 accessibility from mobile networks, the IPv6 migration unfortunately is only engineering overhead because it will never lead to an actual migration. So, what is the opinion of the working group on this one? I did ask the Dutch regulator and they didn't seem to be interested at all in making the migration work. That worries me. Are things different in other countries? Examples we can point to? Geert Jan

In Sweden 3 out of the 4 major networks today support IPv6 for at least the most popular devices. Mobile I'd say is one of the easier to enable IPv6 on, a lot of the hard work has already been done as of 5 years. Ecosystem is mature. -- Mikael Abrahamsson email: swmike@swm.pp.se

I agree. This is exactly the reason why I switched from T-Mobile NL (now Odido I believe) to KPN NL, which happily provides me IPv6.

Me too. I've made similar attempts in the past regarding this, and they didn't even seem to comprehend what I was talking about. -- Marco

From what i know (which is not everything) is that implementing Ipv6 on mobile networks in most cases is a relatively simple action. But depending on the GGSN/PGW/UPF equipment if that’s not the case it can be a traumatic costly nightmare.
From the country I live in, 2/3 mobile operators have implemented v6 on their mobile network (Finland)
In our case the mobile customer gets Ipv6 , and a CGN IPv4 address. I hope this helps to answer your question. In Germany all three mobile networks provide ipv6 (Telekom 2015(dualstack)/2020(v6-only), Vodafone 2019(dualstack), O2 2021(dualstack)). You may travel over the border and buy a sim here ;-) Roaming in NL works with all three German mobile network operators in dualstack mode except for 2G/3G. All German mobile networks had IPv6 for many years now... (For the record, the Incumbent is actually a leading network wrt "this is how you do proper IPv6 deployment" over here, which hints at "we must have been doing this for way too many years already"...)
