Unauthenticated user access to RIPE Atlas

Hello everybody! I was wondering around what are the rules and views on “open user access” to RIPE Atlas ( as in non-authenticated users being able to make RIPE atlas measurements) I ask because as of this morning I noticed that hurricane electric’s bgp.he.net tool is now allowing users to make right atlas measurements without any authentication to RIPE Atlas, this was surprising to me as when I asked a NCC staff member at the last meeting in Berlin about doing something similar to this I was explicitly told that this would not be desired. I cannot remember who told me this ( and I don't have an easy way of finding out again ) but assuming this is allowed I will happily copy this for bgp.tools But I'd like to check with Atlas people before doing such a thing.

Presentations for the WG session are preferably 10-15min long. Please include in your proposal: * a title * a draft copy of your proposed presentation, even if just an outline * a paragraph describing the topic, and why the topic is of interest for the community. Interesting topics include (but are not limited to): recent measurement research which has an operational impact; recent operational work that may open avenues to research; projects, tools, or datasets that support either operations or research. Please submit your presentation proposal by **Friday, 27 October** by emailing us at mat-wg-chairs at ripe.net. We will make our selections and post the agenda soon after. RIPE meetings are fully hybrid with sessions facilitated through meetecho; we encourage presentations from anywhere. With the return of the NN discussion and regulation in the USA as of Oct 19th... https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-chairwoman-rosenworcels-net-neutrality-rem… and especially with my lack of knowledge and understanding of pending EU regulation, I decided to start a good ole fashioned mailing list to try and sort it all out, which is up to nearly 200 members now. Sign up here: https://lists.bufferbloat.net/listinfo/nnagain I am especially interested in finding new blood of all sorts (engineers, lawyers, scientists, foss folk, and infrastructure folk) willing to discuss possible brighter futures for the internet (with us old farts via this archaic method. I considered trying mastodon but it was too complicated). New metrics for videoconferencing, as well as lower layer metrics like MTTR an MTBF are on my mind, as is finding ways to improve QoE for everyone, and de-crapification of the upper layers of the stack, as well as of the gear we buy. There is a separate NPRM going on for a new FCC CyberSecurity label, which I would like to see more teeth pushed into, honestly. The IMWG is a new working group with similar goals of MAT but focuses on creating bridges among academia, researchers, and network operators in the LACNIC region. Thanks Marco *Title:* A Digital Twin based Framework to Enable "What-If" Analysis in BGP Optimization *Outline of the speech:* - introduction and motivation: in this talk we aim to introduce a framework for the creation of Digital Twins of Autonomous Systems in order to enable the execution of "what if" analysis in the context of inter domain routing optimization - background on digital twins: this section is to introduce the basic terminology and concepts on Digital Twins - presentation of the proposed framework: in this section we provide an overview of the architecture of the proposed framework and detail the responsibilities of each functional block - proof of concept: a simple proof of concept is presented, with the aim of showing the effectiveness of the proposal - conclusion and future work *Abstract:* Nowadays, inter domain routing optimization is performed based on the so called "Tweak and Pray" approach, which consists in performing changes in the configuration of the BGP protocol without knowing in advance the consequences of such a modification. This is due to the lack of cooperation among Network Operators in the configuration of the BGP to optimize the inter domain routing. Inefficiency in the resource usage, network anomalies and outages are common consequences of wrong configuration changes performed by Network Operators in an attempt to improve the performance of their infrastructures. In this paper we propose a novel framework based on the Digital Twin technology to enable the execution of "what-if" analysis in the context of Traffic Engineering performed by tuning BGP parameters. Such a paradigm shift will allow Network Operators to be aware of the effects of BGP configuration changes before their actual execution. A proof of concept related to the balancing of inbound traffic in an Autonomous System network, based on the use of the AS Path Prepending technique, is realized to validate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

some thoughts on add-path and bmp at ripe/ris

i have some small thoughts on add-path and BMP in RIPE/RIS. this may hinder more than help, unfortunately. as a researcher, of course i would love a wider view into the AS graph and the views of as many ASs as possible. nom nom. but ... add-path, if not done very carefully, and documented in detail for each peer, will produce views i will not understand. it is analogous to not knowing what view a BGP peer gives RIS today. did it give me a full Nth view into peer X? is the path that of a peer, a customer, a provider? and add-path is worse because it prunes in configuration and vendor- dependent and otherwise unpredictable ways. and, as an operator if P is a RIS peer, and they give RIS BMP showing their input from their peers, upstreams, and customers, those peers, upstreams, and customers have not given thir consent to have their internals published! if they want to have RIS publish their internals, they would peer with RIS and choose what view they present. and, of course, the researcher does not know what view, peer, upstream, or customer P's BMP peer is giving them. same problem as above under add-path. randy

Improved timeliness of RIS dump files

Dear colleagues, We are planning to replace the pipeline that generates MRT dump files publicly available from the RIPE NCC. The new pipeline will have significantly less delay, and also some changes on the structure of the MRT file format [*]. Files in the newer format are available for testing here: https://www.ris.ripe.net/dumps-per-rrc-rest/prototype/ We have received feedback from MRT parser implementers that these files work fine for their parsers, but in case you haven't tested your MRT parser implementation, we ask you to test the new files before we make the switch. Our plan is to make this switch on 3 April 2023. After we make the switch the bview files available at our main location for downloading MRT files will be generated using the new pipeline and we will be able to produce these files in a more timely manner. In 2020 there was a survey of the users of private measurements [2], which was intended to get feedback on their actual use-cases. I seem to recall a very small set of respondents from an already small set of surveyees. The results are probably lost in the ether. I feel there's an aspect of the broader question that is rarely touched upon in these discussions: would user behaviour actually change if non-public measurements went away?
