Dear Colleagues The LIR Portal and related services have experienced several short outages in recent days. This was due to an unsuccessful upgrade of our production servers. All LIR Portal services were down for approximately one hour from 16:00 (UTC) on Wednesday, 21 November, and from 10:00 - 15:00 (UTC) on Thursday, 22 November. The New LIR Registration Wizard remained unavailable until approximately 16:30 (UTC) on Thursday, due to some extra maintenance tasks. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Dear Colleagues, On Saturday 24 November, between 10:00 and 17:00 (UTC), the RIPE NCC will carry out a scheduled maintenance work on our core storage infrastructure. IGF Now Taking Place

[Apologies for duplicate e-mails.] Dear Colleagues, The second meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is currently in progress. Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the meeting takes place from 12-15 November, 2007. During the four-day meeting, over 1,500 participants from around the world representing governments, the private sector, academia, the technical community and international organisations will discuss the most important issues related to the Internet. The RIPE NCC is participating in this event as part of the Number Resource Organization (NRO). Sessions ====== Diversity, Openness, Security, Access and Critical Internet Resources are the central issues of the ongoing community debate and all these topics will be discussed. Each topic will be addressed in individual sessions that will be led by a panel of experts. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments. Sessions of specific interest include: - IPv4 to IPv6: Challenges and Opportunities - Critical Internet Resources; DNSSEC: Securing a Critical Internet Resource - Governance Frameworks for Critical Internet Resources. NRO Report: "Continuing Cooperation"

[Apologies for duplicates] Dear Colleagues The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has participated in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and related activities since the beginning, and it is a process to which the RIPE NCC and all other RIRs are strongly devoted. In response to the Tunis WSIS agenda, the NRO has released "Continuing Cooperation - The NRO's Role in Internet Governance". This report illustrates the many efforts the Regional Internet Registries undertake in order to maintain and develop the Internet and its unique characteristics. The report focuses on the major themes of the 2007 Internet Governance Forum (IGF): Access, Diversity, Openness, Security and Critical Internet Infrastructure. The report was distributed this week at the IGF in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RIPE 55: Short Meeting Report

[Apologies for duplicate e-mails.] Dear Colleagues, The RIPE 55 Meeting took place from 22-26 October, 2007 at the Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam. There were 375 attendees from 40 countries, including representatives from AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC and ICANN, making it the most well attended RIPE Meeting ever held. Highlights ======== Resolution on IPv4 Depletion ---------------------------- Following discussion in several RIPE Working Groups, the RIPE community agreed to issue a statement on IPv4 depletion and the deployment of IPv6. This statement, "RIPE Community Resolution on IPv4 Depletion and Deployment of IPv6", was developed by consensus and will be used as the community's formal position regarding IPv4 depletion. The statement was presented in the Closing Plenary by the Address Policy Working Group Co-Chair, Sander Steffann (Computel Standby). The statement can be found online at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-55/presentations/steffan-resolution.… On Tuesday afternoon, the dedicated IPv4 Depletion session took place, which included a lively discussion. Discussion about the task force's focus, approach and member-selection process took place. Ideas were then presented to the community during the Closing Plenary. Chrisian Panigl (UniVie/ACOnet/VIX) stepped down from his position and was thanked for his support over the years. The working group welcomed Cara Mascini (AMS-IX) into the role of Co-Chair. Policy Development ------------------ The RIPE Address Policy Working Group asked the RIPE NCC to begin preparations for the implementation of proposal 2007-01, "Direct Internet Resource Assignments to End Users from the RIPE NCC" if it is subsequently approved by the community on the Address Policy mailing list. Kurtis Lindquist (Netnod), RIPE NCC Services Working Group Co-Chair, presented the RIPE Policy Development Process (PDP) Appeals Process on behalf of all the Working Group Chairs. It covers reverse DNS procedures and checks, as well as giving information about DNS Monitoring (DNSMON), K-Root and anycasting. The course also covers DNSSEC and the specific procedures set up by the RIPE NCC to secure the in-addr.arpa zones. Please note that the DNS for LIRs course focuses on DNS services and procedures related to being an LIR. The course does: - NOT teach the basics of DNS - NOT describe how to receive Internet resources from the RIPE NCC - NOT describe fully how to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR) The course is intended for technical staff of LIRs. The course also offers practical exercises. OVERVIEW OF TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE: - Routing Registry as a part of the RIPE Whois Database and the Internet Routing Registry (IRR) - Specifying routing policies using (RPSL) Routing Policy Specification Language and the RtConfig tool - IRRToolSet - Routing Information Service (RIS) - Routing Registry Consistency Check Project Please note that this is an advanced course. It will: - NOT teach the basics of routing - NOT teach the basics of RIPE Database operations - NOT describe how to receive Internet resources from the RIPE NCC - NOT describe how to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR) The target audience of the course are technical staff of LIRs: e.g. network operators, engineers etc. This course is not intended for administrative or management staff (e.g. Hostmasters) . This course is based on interactive exercises in a local network set-up.
