Implementation Timeline for Phasing Out Text-Based Email Request Forms

Dear colleagues, On 5 August 2014, we sent a request for feedback on our proposal to phase out email-based request forms: https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/ncc-services-wg/2014-August/002850.… The two-month period for comments has ended, and we would like to thank you all for your feedback. We have taken into account the concerns raised and adjusted the planned implementation accordingly. A summary of the implementation timeline is provided at the bottom of this email. The main concern we received was that the time frame for members to adjust their internal processes was not long enough. We will therefore extend the proposed implementation to the end of May 2015. As of today, the APIs are available for the following resource requests: - IPv4 First Allocation - IPv6 First Allocation - IPv6 Provider Independent (PI) Assignment - Autonomous System (AS) Number Assignment You can find the APIs and the accompanying documentation at: https://www.ripe.net/data-tools/developer-documentation/resource-request-api We ask that you test these APIs in the coming three months (until 31 January 2015) and check that they are compatible with your workflow. Based on the feedback we receive, the final APIs will be deployed at the end of February 2015. We will then archive the email-based request forms and supporting notes that are published on www.ripe.net. Our systems will continue to accept the email-based request forms for a further three months. From the end of May 2015, email-based request forms will no longer be accepted. Another concern raised was with regards to a fall-back mechanism if the LIR Portal and APIs are not available due to technical problems. In such a situation, we currently accept emails to request resources without syntax changes, and we will continue to have this fall-back mechanism in the future. As a final note, over the past weeks we have worked to improve and simplify the request forms in the LIR Portal. Work has now been completed on all forms. The simplified process means that you can complete a request for any Internet resource quickly and easily. We will also publish the information needed to request resources in a document that replaces the supporting notes and maintains a high level of transparency. We appreciate your feedback on further improvements. RIPE NCC Survey 2013 - Key Findings and Results

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Survey 2013 collected feedback from more than 3,600 of our members and stakeholders across 75 of the 76 countries in our service region. The Oxford Internet Institute (OII) analysed the survey data and produced a list of 48 key findings, which we published in November 2013. The RIPE NCC examined these findings, took action on them where appropriate and produced a report on these actions. The RIPE NCC Survey 2013 Key Findings and Results document is now available: https://www.ripe.net/lir-services/member-support/info/surveys/ripe-ncc-surv… By publishing this document, we aim to increase transparency around the actions taken by the RIPE NCC as a result of the survey. While all of the key findings were addressed and much progress has been made, there are still areas that can be further improved. The RIPE NCC will continue to explore ways of improving the services we provide to our membership and to the RIPE community. If you would like to comment on the findings and actions, or on the document itself, please let us know at <feedback(a)ripe.net>. In November 2014, the RIPE NCC will carry out a number of lightweight focus groups around our service region to look at the RIPE NCC's progress and identify areas for further action. A report will be produced following these focus group sessions and will be shared with the membership. The RIPE NCC aims to survey its members and stakeholders every three years. The Beta Version of the New DNSMON is Now Available

Request for Feedback: Phasing Out Text-Based Email Request Forms

Dear colleagues, We are currently working to streamline the process around resource requests, which is something that was asked for in the RIPE NCC Survey 2013. As you will be aware, we offer request forms in the LIR Portal in addition to the text-based email forms that are published in the RIPE document store: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/current-ripe-documents/request-forms-supporti… Maintaining two different systems for requests is inefficient, as it requires duplicate work every time there is a policy change. More importantly, the text-based email forms use legacy systems that take engineering time from our staff to maintain. We contacted many LIRs who made requests using the text-based email forms and in most cases they were using them out of habit or due to specific workflows they had. Most said they would not mind to change to the LIR Portal request forms, or adjust their workflows to use an API. Today, most requests come via the LIR Portal rather than by email. Since November 2013: - 95% of IPv6 allocations were issued after an LIR Portal form was sent (909 out of 960) - 91% of IPv4 allocations were requested via the LIR Portal (1,051 out of 1,154) - 75% of ASNs were requested via the LIR Portal (727 out of 975) - From the 25% of ASNs requested via email, 50% of these requests needed several iterations to pass the syntax checks Based on this feedback and the fact that a clear majority of members are requesting resources through the LIR Portal, we would like to propose the following: - The text-based email forms would be archived on 1 November 2014. - We would continue to accept email requests until the end of December 2014 to ensure that regular workflows are not disrupted. - The RIPE NCC would offer an API for those members with specific workflows that prevent them from using the request forms in the LIR Portal. - Text-based request forms that may be used by non-members (e.g. ENUM requests) would remain on the website. - To maintain transparency regarding the information needed to obtain resources, the RIPE NCC would publish these procedures on www.ripe.net. We are interested in your feedback on this proposal: - Do you agree with the general idea of phasing out text-based request forms? - What specific requirements would need to be addressed by the API? - Would December 2014 be a suitable deadline to give you time to adjust your systems and workflows?
