As regards sustainability, 

I think that researchers need well conceived and articulated architectures of ***physical*** deployments of telecommunications networks.

The analyzed substrate must be declared with as much transparency as possible.
A primary limiting factor is the degree of willingness by operators to disclose implementational details.

Abstractions that conceal physical elements lack conviction.
