FYI -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [LIMITS] Funded PhD openings in LIMITS at the University of Toronto Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2024 22:58:50 +0000 From: Christoph Becker <christoph.becker@utoronto.ca> To: LIMITS <limits@googlegroups.com> The Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto is currently accepting applications for funded PhD positions <https://ischool.utoronto.ca/phd-in-information/> (entry in Fall 2022) and I am looking for students to join the Just Sustainability Design lab (https://justsustainabilitydesign.org/)! I would be delighted to receive applications from the Computing within LIMITS space. I will be especially excited to hear from students who want to question and deconstruct common dogma and myths such as “sustainable AI” and instead work for genuine systems change including degrowth and post-growth perspectives on technology design, climate justice, convivial and liberatory technologies, commons, pluriversal designs, etc… Several faculty members <https://ischool.utoronto.ca/faculty-of-information-phd-student-recruitment/> besides me also conduct relevant research in the area, and there is a connection to the School for the Environment <https://www.environment.utoronto.ca/events/computing-climate-story-global-climate-modelling> at the University of Toronto as well as other units including the School of Cities, the Department of Computer Science, etc. If you are looking for a PhD program, come work with us! UofT is an excellent institution, the Faculty of Information is an extremely diverse environment allowing highly interdisciplinary work, and Toronto is one of the world’s most multicultural cities, with more than half of its population born outside of Canada. The Faculty of Information provides a competitive funding package to all full-time PhD students. Starting in Fall 2025, PhD students will receive $40,000 (CAD) in each year for 4 years. Additional funding is available in the 5th year. (More on the website.) If you have students seeking PhD positions, please let them know! The deadline (Dec 1) is fast approaching. I am very happy to answer any questions and provide advice and feedback.
