sometimes no RTT?

Hi all! I'm new to RIPE Atlas, and right now using it for educational purposes :)) lately I've seen that some of my traceroute measurements do not have RTT. although it's not completely ignored by the hop (I get the data like from, size, ttl), but only rtt is missing :)) any idea how, why and when does this happen? :) for a live example, check Measurement #4458653. 48th probe's 11th hop's 1st query (counting from zero, btw) does not have rtt :) thanks in advance! side question: is there an (un)official IRC channel? :) -- Antranig Vartanian | PGP Key ID : 0xDAB81456 https://antranigv.am | https://cert.am (* do one thing and do it well *)

development server?

Is the Atlas probe hackable?

SSL Measurement shows time errors for Certs

accounting glitch for probe 15105

Tonight Freddy Bulow's post made me take a look at 15105. I was certain it would be up, but that was only halfway what I found. It was listed as being down since June 16th, and the uptime graph was showing an 8-day hole. It was, however, showing traffic on the graph, and locally I was also seeing normal probe traffic. Here's a pcap: https://highlyexperimental.kitsune.dk/201606242131.pcap At packet 765 I powercycled the probe, it came back up, and now showed 0 minutes up. That was expected, but what also happened was that the uptime graph filled in to no longer show downtime, the log entry showing the probe going down on the 16th disappeared (yes, really), and a new one showed it going down on the 24th with a few seconds downtime. The only thing left is the 8-day hole in the credit log, that did not change. /Kasper Pedersen Beware of corner cases. They tend to have sharp corners. How to get a new USB stick ?

Hello, The SanDisk USB (4GB) provided with the RIPE Atlas probe don’t work anymore since more 5 days and the connection logs say “NO USB”. To check the USB stick, I plugged a personal one and since this time the probe is working again. I have this probe number 18685 since 2015-03-05. I would like know if the team could send me a new USB stick to replace the old one please or if I need to buy a new one myself ? Best regards, Élodie

Probe #16917 shows disconnected

Hi RIPE-Atlas-Probe-16917 gets the Adresse IP : 192.168.1.13 on the DHCP of the ADSL Modem but RipeAtlas site says probe is disconnected. I restarted it several times, checked the cable to the witch and replaced the power supply. No way : The 'globe' LED is permanently blinking. What else should I check ? Unknown probe ID for v2 probe

Dear RIPE Atlas Probe Team, Today I wanted to register my probe, but I can not figure out the probe ID. This probe is a v2 probe with MAC 00:20:4A:E0:21:2C The Probe is connected and should be visible behind: 130.180.54.46 (sbh12.dy.n-jakob.eu) My DHCP isn't showing the probe ID as name. Just shows * or empty hostname. Inside my RFC1918 address space it has the IP 192.168.2.101 and is reachable via ICMP at least. Do you guys see the probe connected to your infrastructure? Update on problem with probes’ USB sticks

Hi all, We want to let you know that we have seen the active conversations about the USB sticks and the problems they’re causing for some RIPE Atlas probes. We are aware of these issues, and are taking steps to ensure this doesn’t become a real problem for the RIPE Atlas system. We’ve just published a RIPE Labs article that explains the preliminary analysis of our logs we’ve begun to investigate this issue. In the coming weeks, we will make sure we analyse all the logs we have in order to try to find a possible solution. v4 versus v6 -- who connects faster?

Thought I share this along: [a] http://goo.gl/hbzbwD You enter a dual-stacked website (ALEXA top 10K) and it shows you the difference in TCP connect times over v4 and v6 as seen by all dual-stacked RIPE Atlas probes (~1.3K probes). You can also filter the visualisation from a specific origin-AS. This additional filter can be useful to view performance towards a website from a specific origin-AS (say DTAG). Disclaimer: This is an outcome of a 1.5d long hackathon project. As such, the codebase is possibly inundated with bugs. USB drive more harmful than helpful?

>From both my own (short term) experience and from what's being written on this list, I'm getting the impression that the USB drive may be costing more than it's worth. I have in only about 3 months experienced multiple probe issues due to USB drives and there have been multiple threads on this list which suggest that I am far from alone. I will go so far as to suspect that a substantial number of disconnected and abandoned probes have similar issues, but the hosters may be unwilling or unable to spend the necessary time to investigate and resolve them. If the main reason for the drive is to cache data during unavailability of the command and control center, this may not be worth the effort. I would suggest making the drive optional. That may mean fewer data points from and/or fewer UDMs possible on those probes without a functioning drive. But it may also mean a couple thousand probes more connected and therefore available for measurements at all. I'm not saying that probes should not ask for their drives to be fixed/replaced, but it should not be a requirement for the probe to run. One might give an incentive to hosters to run their probes with functioning drives by giving less credits for connected probes without a drive. Any thoughts? Michael -- Sent from a mobile. At the first hint of trouble, it may actually have been premature, I swapped the USB drive on my probe with a brandname replacement. Note that there is a lot of poor quality stuff, especially in "giveaway" drives, and the fact that the disc is encrypted of course does not help heuristics in the USB drive controller to lengthen the drive life. The replacement was painless: power down, insert blank disk, powerup, did the dishes, when I was done the probe was done initializing and everything was working fine. I've added "replaced-broken-sandisk-usb-stick" to the probe. Perhaps this is a useful heuristic to monitor how prevalent the problem really is. Geert Jan

No. Everything seemed normal except that it was down. All tags like "IPv4 works" etc. were there. The only thing was that the status was down. So I pulled the power, pulled USB, replaced the power. Went to brush my teeth and came back to replace USB and went to bed around 23:30 (21:30UTC) A few hours (!) later the probe came back to live. The power for the probe comes from the modem. That might be a possible cause, I'm thinking. Could the developers please see if the probe can indicate power shortage? Could it get some recovering mechanism built in? Fwiw, I always power directly from an outlet, never tributary on the USB. I've yet to have such fails, so my anecdata aligns with the underpower theory. Also, probes may be subjected to ungraceful power down situations, depending on where they are stationed. That can also be a flash drive killer. I don't think we are hitting the write limits of the sticks. I suspect the units are often in underpowered or ungraceful pwoer-down situations, or the USB flash itself is not responding gracefully to poweroff situations. I don't suppose RIPE buys enough USB sticks to get to talk to engineers at SanDISK? I know the newer Raspberry Pi will report when it is in an underpowered situation. Can the TP-Link detect and warn when underpowered? What is the minimum power recommended for TP-Link + USB? Also, are there any USB sticks that have lower power needs and are more robust in low power IoT situations? Is anyone trying to post-mortem the failed sticks? Probe is down but does send DNS according tot SOS history

Hi, How can it be that the status of a probe is down while I see current DNS requests in the SOS list without any remarks in the 'info' column? Even the power-up time is increasing. If the probe can send DNS requests, why does it not have some mechanism to recover? Seem not too hard to make it reboot if it's status is down. Thanks, Dave

Replacing flash key

My V3 probe (26656) disconnected yesterday, simple reboots didn't help. Suspecting problem with USB key I first tried to replace it with a new one. I took bog standard Transcend JetFlash 350 8Gb right out of the wrapping and inserted it into a started probe 10 minutes after boot. Did not format the flash key or alter it in any way, because someone previously said that it is not necessary. Unfortunately, probe did not come up, and the flash key seems unchanged after approximately 1 hour wait. What should I do to switch to a new flash key? Also, did someone tried connecting HDDs/SSDs, shouldn't they work better? evaluating ripe atlas

Dear Ripe Atlas Users, I would like to evaluate ripe atlas features. Is there any quick and simple way to earn credits? From what I can see becoming sponsorship begins from 1000 EUR which is above my budget for evaluating the tool. Hosting probe is not something feasible for me at the moment. Is there any option to buy credits for something like 100 EUR? Hi all, I have a probe that's been down for several days now. I did contact RIPE about it, but support has been superficial. I also didn't yet find the level of technical detail I need in the information on the website and in this list's archives. The 8GB drive, when reformatted on a windows box with FAT32 as per support instructions, surprisingly only comes out with a 1GB partition. Inspecting the drive under linux, I find multiple partitions, with only the first containing an a fat32 filesystem: Platte /dev/sdc: 7927 MByte, 7927234560 Byte 244 Köpfe, 62 Sektoren/Spur, 1023 Zylinder, zusammen 15482880 Sektoren Einheiten = Sektoren von 1 × 512 = 512 Bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Festplattenidentifikation: 0xc3072e18 Gerät boot. Anfang Ende Blöcke Id System /dev/sdc1 2048 2099199 1048576 b W95 FAT32 /dev/sdc2 2099200 4196351 1048576 83 Linux /dev/sdc3 4196352 6293503 1048576 83 Linux On first glance, the others contain ext2 filesystems # fsck -N /dev/sdc? fsck von util-linux 2.20.1 [/sbin/fsck.vfat (1) -- /dev/sdc1] fsck.vfat /dev/sdc1 [/sbin/fsck.ext2 (2) -- /dev/sdc2] fsck.ext2 /dev/sdc2 [/sbin/fsck.ext2 (3) -- /dev/sdc3] fsck.ext2 /dev/sdc3 but on further inspections do not contain a valid magic number in their superblocks, so they are effectively unformatted. I would therefore suspect that they are not being used by the probe. Now the question: What is the correct layout supposed to look like (primary/secondary, size, ID, FS-type)? I would like to get my probe back up and running. Bonus question: What can I expect to find in point of files/data on the drive, that would tell me whether the probe was working correctly until I cut power and removed the drive? Thanks, Michael

probe congestion?

Hi all, while running a DNS UDM on a fixed set of (reused from a previous UDM) probes, I noticed the following. When I start 6 UDMs against the same set using the web UI, as a one-off measurement, starting "now", the RTTs for all of the measurements shoots up on all of the probes (500-1000+ ms). When I start the 6 tests individually, the RTTs are much lower, and close to what I'd expect them to be. It appears to me that when multiple UDMs are scheduled on the same probe, these should be run in serial, not parallel, in order to not run into congestion issues. Or am I simply expecting the wrong behaviour, and should I not schedule one-off measurements in parallel in the first place? ~paul

SixXS issues

I received my second probe* yesterday (different ASNs) and it is connects via SixXS for IPv6 as the ISP isn't supplying native v6 (despite repeatedly asking when they will catch up on something around for twenty years!). It booted fine and the appear no issues with the IPv4 connectivity but the v6 is going up and down every few minutes (for around the same period.) Not finding anything relevant after searching the forum (nor on google) I'm trying to discover why this might be. My other machines are not experiencing any difficulty with v6 connectivity and the probe is connected to the same 16-port switch as everything else. LatencyMON Widget Y axis in milliseconds

I'm using LatencyMON <https://atlas.ripe.net/docs/tools-latencymon/> widget to monitor my network performance. It's very convenient. Unfortunately, it always loads with latency shown in %% (of what?), not in milliseconds, so I have to make one extra click in order to view actual milliseconds. Is there some hidden switch that would make milliseconds the default? Shouldn't it be initially default in the first place? -- With Best Regards, Marat Khalili

ping measurements and high lts

When looking at the ping measurement json results I found some probes are reporting a very high lts (last time synchronized). Is it normal for very high lts values to be reported? An article/FAQ entry about probe troubleshooting

Hi all, it seems that failing probes are getting more and more to be an issue, possibly due to USB flash drive failure. I think it would be nice if there was an article / FAQ entry with some official troubleshooting procedures, so we could just send a link to anybody complaining about non functional probe. Is there something like this on the roadmap? Perhaps we as the community could make something up: - how to check whether the port probe is connected to has proper IP and DNS parameters and is allowed to establish a SSH session to TCP port 443 in the Internet (beware of DPI firewalls that allow HTTPS but not SSH over 443) - how to check the LED status and the SOS list at the probe page (the current LED explanation in the FAQ is too techy and even power users like me still don't understand all presented states :) ) - how to diagnose USB flash drive failure, how to force reformatting the flash drive and how to replace it with a new one What do you think? Failure Rate on Atlas Probes

Hi All, What's the known failure rate of Atlas probes, and the mean time before failure? At a guess 20% or more of the probes I've been working with have failed within their first year of deployment. Sometimes they come back with a power cycle, sometimes they don't. Regards, Jon
