RIPE NCC Executive Board Announces Axel Pawlik as Managing Director

[apologies for duplicates.] Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, Daniel Karrenberg has stepped down from his position as General Manager of the RIPE NCC. Following his announcement the RIPE NCC Executive board has employed a great deal of effort to find a suitable replacement for this position. The RIPE NCC Executive Board is happy to announce Axel Pawlik as the new Managing Director of the RIPE NCC. Axel has been formally introduced to the participants at the recent AGM'99 meeting held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The RIPE NCC welcomes Axel and wishes him all the success in his new function. To help Axel get up to speed as quickly as possible, not only will he be assisted by the Executive Board, but also by Daniel and the staff. Kind Regards, Paul Rendek Communications Officer ===== RIPE NCC Executive Board Announces Axel Pawlik as Managing Director Amsterdam, The Netherlands -- 19 October 1999 -- The RIPE NCC (Reseaux IP Europeens Network Co-ordination Centre) Executive Board today announced the appointment of Axel Pawlik as Managing Director of the RIPE NCC Association, effective 16 October 1999. Mr. Pawlik succeeds Daniel Karrenberg who served as General Manager since the establishment of the organisation in 1992. Employed at the University of Dortmund in Germany from 1985 to 1992, Axel Pawlik contributed to the establishment of UNIX networking as a publicly available service in Germany through the University of Dortmund. This institution introduced Internet access services to the business community and general public. During the period 1987-1991, Mr. Pawlik also served as a member of the board of the German Unix Users Group (GUUG). Understanding the demand for a commercial operation to provide Internet services, Mr. Pawlik founded EUnet Deutschland GmbH in 1992 and commercialised the operation. Under his leadership EUnet Deutschland GmbH became the market leader in Germany and one of the strongest EUnet networks in Europe. Mr. Pawlik was actively involved in the international operations of EUnet and the Internet community and held a series of executive positions within EUnet, initially as a member and eventually Vice-Chairman of the EUnet Executive Committee from 1988-1991. In his position as Vice-Chairman he lead the establishment of EUnet Ireland Ltd, which aimed to consolidate the host of national EUnet networks throughout Europe. Here he served as EUnet Ltd. Chairman of the Board from 1994 to 1995. Mr. Pawlik graduated from the University of Dortmund in 1983 with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. Since 1997 he lived with his family in North-west Ireland enjoying the clean air and rural lifestyle. Dear All, below is the hostcount for September 1999. The table shows an increase since last month of over 380,000 (or 4.2%) to a total of over 9,500,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The it domain shows the highest increase for September with approximately 130,000 hosts more than in August. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/statistics/hostcount/ - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - We apologise for the (as usual, unavoidable) delay in publication of the hostcount this month, caused mainly by operational problems with the de zone. No data file could be acquired for the following TLD's: uk - collection problem be - transfer problem cf, ne - axfr block at top level Last month's data was used for uk and be so as to keep the overall figure somewhat consistent with previous months. Despite the problems described, the total hosts and zones counted rose quite sharply. Dear RIPE members, Well, after wondering a while, I am forwarding here my proposal for ICANN Director. I know that most of you could write a much better proposal even for the same person. Please do it. This time, we are still in time. Yes, Rob Blokzijl is The candidate of mine. I hope, not only mine. Rob is so modest and so unformal, that usually we forget his name when we speak about a formal duty. I would like to change this. As the world is getting "more formal", there is no other chance than asking "less formal" persons to take "formal responsibilities" in order to keep to world as free and "unformal" as it is possible. This is the main reason why I would like to see Rob as Director of ICANN. I know that my "nomination" is incomplete - please write a better one. The ASO will have the responsibility for nominating three ICANN Directors. This responsibility will, in the normal course of events, be conducted through an open process as outlined in the draft Memorandum of understanding as published at the following URL. http://www.ripe.net/info/ncc/mou-draft.html For the initial ASO nominations to the ICANN Board, the ASO Address Council will nominate three Directors to serve terms of 1, 2, and 3 years. Announcement of the Address Council members - RIPE NCC Service Region

Members of the Address Council of ICANN - RIPE NCC Service Region During the 34th RIPE Meeting in Amsterdam on 23 September 1999 three Members of the ICANN ASO Address Council were selected as suggested by the call for nominations of 8th September. The duties of the ICANN Address Council are mainly threefold: First, to advise the Board of ICANN on matters referred to the Address Council by the ICANN Board. Secondly to oversee the existing regional processes for development of global policies relating to distribution and registration of Internet address space, identifiers used in Internet inter-domain routing, and the part of the DNS name space which is derived from the Internet address space and the inter-domain routing identifiers. The third being to appoint Directors to the ICANN Board of Directors in accordance with the By-laws of ICANN. The selection procedure was discussed in the LIR-WG, the open forum for policy issues in RIPE. The selection was performed during the RIPE Plenary meeting. As a pure consensus based selection is highly improbable, the final selection was performed by a secret ballot. The result of this ballot was confirmed by consensus support form the audience. There was also consensus that the three selected candidates should themselves establish their terms. To the best of our knowledge this selection has been in accordance with the principles described in the draft MoU (http://www.ripe.net/info/ncc/mou-draft.html) The selected individuals are: Sabine Jaume, RENATER for a one year period Hans Petter Holen, SOL System for a two year period Wilfried Woeber, Vienna University for a three year period We wish them success and look forward to co-operating with them. RIPE NCC AGM - Board Elections

It is with some regret that I must announce I will be standing down as both a member and chairman of the RIPE NCC Executive Board, effective from the AGM on the 19th October. Although I was appointed for a three-year term, I have decided to step down on the second anniversary of my appointment, so that NCC members have the opportunity to elect a replacement to my position at the forthcoming AGM. This is entirely due to pressure of other commitments, which have now reached the level where I cannot give the NCC the high standards of attention and activity that I believe are necessary in this role. Although we have made significant progress recently towards resolving two issues key to the NCC's future - formation of the ICANN Address Supporting Organisation (ASO), and appointment of new Managing Director, I am aware this remains a crucial time for the NCC with more critical work to be done, and do not take my departure lightly. A reminder that the deadline for nominations for the NCC Executive Board Elections is the end of this Monday, 20th September. As there will now be my position to fill as well as that of Kees Neggers, if you have not already put forward your nominations please do so by the deadline. [Apologies for duplicate mails] This is an update to our earlier posting regarding a proposal to form an Address Supporting Organisation (ASO) within the framework of the International Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers (ICANN). RIPE NCC, together with the other Regional Internet Registries (RIR), ARIN and APNIC submitted this proposal for ICANN to consider at their August 26th Board meeting in Santiago, Chile. The RIPE NCC is pleased to report that ICANN has accepted this proposal. The resolutions approved at the recent ICANN Board meeting can be found at: http://www.icann.org/santiago/santiago-resolutions.htm The RIR Boards have worked to produce a draft Memorandum of Understanding that will form the ASO. This document can be found at: http://www.ripe.net/info/ncc/mou-draft.html In addition we need to progress with the selection of nominations for the Address Council. A formal call for nominations has been published outlining the process of the initial formation of the Address Council.
