Short content description
-------------------------
This is the regularly published list of Local Internet Registries
in Europe.
FTP Access
----------
All RIPE documents and Internet RFC`s are available via anonymous FTP
from host ftp.ripe.net. Type "ftp ftp.ripe.net".
Login with username "anonymous" supplying your email address as the
password. After logging in, type "cd ripe/docs/" followed
by the command "get filename".
The relevant filenames for this document are:
ripe-111.txt for the ASCII version
ripe-111.ps for the PostScript version
Electronic Mail Retrieval of Documents
--------------------------------------
Documents can also be retrieved from the RIPE document store using a
mail server program. For more information on how to use the program,
send email to: mail-server(a)ripe.net with "send HELP" in the body text.
RIPE NCC Interactive Information Server
---------------------------------------
Type "telnet info.ripe.net". This is a menu driven service allows
the document store to be browsed. After reading documents you are
prompted as to whether you would like to receive an email copy of the
document you have just read. If you would, you simply enter your email
address and the document will be mailed to you.
Below are details of alternative methods of access.
Gopher Access
-------------
The same documents are available via a "gopher" server at
"gopher gopher.ripe.net".
WAIS Access
-----------
There is also a "WAIS" server at wais.ripe.net, where there is a WAIS index
for RIPE documents "ripe-docs.src"
WWW Access
----------
For those who wish to add this home page at the RIPE NCC to their own
customized home pages, it can be accessed as:
http://www.ripe.net
MIME Mail Reader
----------------
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant Mail Reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the RIPE document by
FTP or mail server.

Dear operations people!
As you should know, the Internet is suffering from routing table
explosion and it is only a questin of time until major routers which
need a full routing table run out of resources. It is necessary to
start aggregation *now*!
Based on the current full routing table we compute the possible
gain if aggregation is done at the AS level. This computation
assumes that no holes will be created, i.e. aggregates do not
include currently unannounced networks.
All ASes should be able to achieve almost all the savings
assumed by this computation.
Please go ahead, start aggregating and remove the more specific
announcements.
This is a question of avoiding a big bang which will be desastrous
to the Internet (industry).
Think globally, act locally!
These statistics and others are computed daily and can be retrieved
from directory ftp.ripe.net:cidr/stats as long as the Internet
continues to work.

Below is the list of action items from the RIPE meeting (and previously).
The actions are grouped into two different categories: "Done" and "Open".
If you are on the list with an action against your name, would you please
reply confirming the status of that action : ie. whether it has been
"Done" (hopefully) or whether it is still "Open", with an expected approx
date for completion, if possible.
This list is in response to a number of requests from people for more
support and continuity of work items between meetings. It is the third
reminder to be sent out and there will be one more reminder only.
The last list will be generated one week from the next RIPE meeting - Monday
9th May.
Thanks,
Anne

====================================================================
Public Transport - how much does it cost and where can I get tickets?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Tickets of 15 strips (`Strippenkaart' costing Hfl. 10.75) can be
bought in Post Offices, railway stations and cigarette shops.
Tickets of 2 and 3 strips can be bought on the bus or the tram
but they are much more expensive. You have to validate the
ticket yourself in the metro stations and in the trams (except on
lines 4, 6, 7, 10, 12 and 13). In the buses the driver will validate
the ticket.
Amsterdam is divided into zones: the old city is in zone `Centrum'
whereas CWI is in zone `Oost'. You need to count how many zones
you will be travelling through (from the centre - CWI is 2 zones)
and count up that number of strips on your ticket + 1 extra. So in
the above example you will need to stamp the 3rd strip. In case of
overflow you stamp the last strip of the first ticket and start counting
the remaining strips on the next ticket. Confused? Ask any member of
the local organizing committee.
Warning:
BEWARE of pickpockets in crowded places.

NSC'94
The Network Services Conference 1994
London, England, 28-30 November 1994
Overview
Open computer networking is no longer the sole domain of universities
and research institutions. Today, governments, schools, public
organizations, commercial enterprises and private individuals are
actively using and supplying information over the global Internet.
How will these various network communities cooperate and interact?
How will the academic and research community adapt to the new network
reality? How will the network and networking tools now available
stand up to the explosion in number of users and amount of information
available? How will we train novices? What will we pay for and what
will be for free as the commercialization of the network progresses?
Will we be inundated by advertising over the net? These are only a few
of the questions facing network service providers and users alike.
Building on the success of the previous Network Services Conferences
in Pisa (1992) and Warsaw (1993), NSC'94 will focus on the issue of
providing services to customers, with special attention paid to the
exciting developments in global tools and services. We will address the
impact of the new global tools on service development and support, the
changing function of traditional tools and services (such as archives),
new services (such as multi-media communications), the future role of
the library and the effects of commercialization on networks and network
services. Customer support at all levels, and the role of support in
accessing global services, will also be covered.
Talks, tutorials, demonstrations and other conference activities will
address the needs of the research, academic, educational, governmental,

PRAGUE
is like a history lesson come true. As you walk among the long stone
palaces or across the 'Charles Bridge', with Smetana's Vltava flowing
below and pointed towers all around, you will feel as if history had
stopped somewhere back in the 18th century. Goethe called Prague the
'prettiest gem in the stone crown of the world'. This cultural center
of Europe is famous for its architectural treasures that have been so
well preserved. Its wealth can be gathered from the diversity and
quantity of the many Romanesque monuments and its Gothic town planning.
In time new styles developed, like Baroque and later on Art Nouveau.
The countenance of Prague reflects every cultural period and all the
different artistic styles.
Musical life is a deeply rooted tradition in Prague. One only needs
to remember the names of the two greatest Czech composers,
Antonin Dvorak and Bedrich Smetana. Their music can still be heard.
It is said that it is an advantage to be a foreigner in Prague.
The renowned Slavonic hospitality manifests itself in Prague at
every step. A lot of traditional Czech products are offered, like
crystal, porcelain, earthenware, but also CDs, and illustrated
art books. The national beverages like beer and sliwowitz are worth
a try and restaurants offer a wide variety of food. Prague is ready
to welcome its visitors and let you share in the experience of
'awakening to a beautiful dream'.

All,
Better late than never, here's the March 1994 RIPE DNS hostcount. Some
comments:
- a mistake in the January 1994 hostcount caused the January and
February counts to be off by 17. I have corrected this in the
hostcounts for these months, and in the Overview appended below. Also
all files on ftp.ripe.net have been changed to reflect this.
- only a few countries went slightly down, CS for obvious reasons
(migrating to CZ and SK) and only PL really showed a little less.
Interesting is that I have counted France(FR) 3 times in two days, and
have seen a difference in the outcome of over 7000 machines ... The
best has been included below.
- overall a nice increase of just over 32,000 to over 655,000. The
increase this quarter has been 18.4 percent, slightly higher than last
quarter.
- Germany (DE), United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland (IE) have been counted
from within the country, all other countries counted from Amsterdam.
- all output (gzipped) again available on ftp.ripe.net:ripe/hostcount
Enjoy,
-Marten

This is an overview of the History of the RIPE hostcounts.
It only contains the totals. The totals for 1990-1991 should be considered
rather unstable and unreliable because the program used then was not really
tuned, plus the count was not done as regular as it is now.
Count : total hostcount for all European top level domains
Delta : delta since previous count
Delta % : delta as percentage of previous count
Q Delta : delta over the past quarter
Q Delta%: delta over last quarter as percentage of end of last quarter count
For the Q Deltas I have not calculated those back before 1992, because the
figures for 1990-1991 are not too reliable.
*) Dec 1991 hostcount estimated at 135,000.
