Invitation to comment on draft RIR-ICANN contract

Dear all, As RIPE NCC members are aware, the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) have been working together for some time on the production of a relationship agreement, or contract, between the RIRs and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). There is now a draft contract that, if executed, would represent agreement between the RIRs and ICANN on matters of roles, responsibilities and procedures relating to Internet address management and global address management policies. This contract would further codify, or formalise, the existing working relationship between the RIRs and ICANN which is set forth in the ASO MoU. Pending the final approval of RIR and ICANN boards, and the satisfactory development of the ICANN reform process, the RIRs believe that this document could be signed. The table shows a decrease since last month of over 148,000 (or 0,9%) to a total of almost 16,270,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The fi domain shows the highest increase for February with approximately 22,000 hosts more than in January. RIPE 42 registration is open

Dear Colleagues, RIPE 42 will take place from 29 April - 3 May 2002 at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The registration for RIPE 42 is already open. ICANN Reform - a proposal

Dear All, on 24 February 2002 the President and CEO of ICANN, Stuart Lynn, published a discussion document that -1- analyses the current problems and shortcomings of ICANN, and -2- proposes a new structure for a reformed ICANN. This document can be found at http://www.icann.org/accra/reform-topic.htm A first reaction by the RIPE NCC has been published on 1 March 2002, and can be found at http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/about/regional/icann-reform.html Furthermore, some (personal) opinions from the IETF Chair, Harald Alvestrand, can be found at http://www.alvestrand.no/icann/icann_reform.html All this is of the utmost importance to both RIPE and the RIPE NCC. I would therefore strongly encourage the RIPE community to read these documents very carefully, and start a discussion on their implications. It is clear that we are at a crossroads as far as ICANN is concerned, and that we might have a last opportunity to do it right this time. The status of the proposal is as follows: - the proposal was presented to the ICANN Board on 23 February - the Board discussed it on 23-24 February - the board decided to publish the document and ask for input from all affected parties - the board will at some time in the (near) future take a decission on restructuring ICANN. This will not happen at the forthcoming Board meeting in Accra I suggest to use this list <ripe-list(a)ripe.net> for further discussions. I will certainly use this list to let my own views be known. Important information on coming RIPE Meeting

Dear Colleagues, RIPE 42 will take place from 29 April - 3 May 2002 at the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The registration for RIPE 42 will open on 18 February 2002. Outside the RIPE Meeting there are extra activities in Amsterdam during this week. These are: 29th April: Queen's Night Amsterdam In the evening there will be celebrations all over the center with bands playing in the streets. 30th April: Queen's Day Amsterdam Our Queen Beatrix will celebrate her 64th birthday on this day. Amsterdam will be turned into one big street fair. You will find bands playing on several corners and there will be an open market throughout Amsterdam. This happening will start at 11.00 hour in the morning and officially ends at 02.00 hour. The traffic situation will change slightly on the 30th April as the streets of Amsterdam will be used for the open market. Here are some helpful travel hints: Taxi from the airport to the hotel: All taxis are able to reach any hotel in the Amsterdam, including the Krasnapolsky. Tram from Central Station: This will not be possible and we advise you to walk from Central Station to the hotel. It is a 10 minute walk. There will be no trams running on the 30th April from 9.00 - 18.00 hour. By car: Please park your car in the Transferium at the Arena (ringroad Amsterdam Exit: Transferium). This is highly recommended.
