Dear Colleagues, The RIPE NCC is happy to announce the launch of its re-structured Website. The aim was to provide users of the site with more structure and ease of use without eliminating the clarity of the pages which have received recognition in the past. With the new structure in place, we hope that you will find it easy to navigate through the site and find all of the information you require. The site also marks the launch of the new RIPE NCC logo. RIPE Meeting fees

Dear colleagues, The RIPE meeting fee for this year has been increased so that all the direct costs of the RIPE meeting (meeting room rental, coffee breaks and meals, etc.) are covered by particpants' fees. The RIPE NCC will continue to provide the infrastructure necessary for these meetings (organisation, personnel, technical infrastructure, etc) at no cost. Some of the direct costs of the past RIPE meetings have been subsidised by the RIPE NCC and both the RIPE NCC executive board and myself as RIPE chair felt that this should no longer continue. This decision was agreed to by the RIPE NCC membership at the NCC's Annual General Meeting in October of this year. The reasons for this increase are simple. As the number of attendees continues to grow the number of inexpensive venues available decreases. Large hotels are about the only places left where the RIPE meetings can be successfully held. Also, an increasing number of people have had higher and higher demands for quality, not just in terms of the meeting rooms but also in terms of the catering. Please rest assured that our goal is as it was: to provide the high quality meetings you have come to expect and at the lowest possible costs to you. RIPE Region Hostcount for November 1999

The table shows an increase since last month of over 190,000 (or 1.9%) to a total of around 10,215,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The fr domain shows the highest increase for November with approximately 540,000 (!) hosts more than in October. RIPE Region Hostcount for October 1999

Dear All, below is the hostcount for October 1999. The table shows an increase since last month of over 470,000 (or 4.9%) to a total of more than 10,000,000 (cheer!) hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The -it- domain shows the highest increase for October with approximately 180,000 hosts more than in September. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/statistics/hostcount/ - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - We apologise for the delay in publication of the hostcount this month. Delays are becoming increasingly frequent due to the sheer size of the zones meaning that resource requirments are extremely large for some TLDs. And again, the exceptionally large raise this month can only be partially attributed to the lateness of publication, since most of the TLD data was collected at the usual time. Please remember that last month, no data could be published for -uk- or -be- which probably also influences the count for this month positively (though by no means decisively). Announcement: 3 new ICANN board members appointed

Dear friends of RIPE, The address council of the Address Supporting Organisation of ICANN has today performed its first important task. Following the regional open calls for nominations, three members for the ICANN board has been selected Rob Blokzijl (RIPE NCC region) for a 3 years term Pindar Wong (APNIC region) for a 2 years term Ken Fockler (ARIN region) for a 1 year term The terms may be reconsidered at the upcoming meeting in Los Angeles, but for formal reasons we had to decide on the terms without having time to meet or consult with the candidates. It is worth noting that the Address Council has been under enormous pressure to come up with the candidates by today at latest. According to the ICANN bylaws, the current ICANN board has to be informed of the new board members 7 days before the new board members can take their seat. We were therefor facing two choices: rush the process as much as possible, an almost impossible task with members of the address council from Japan, China, Korea, Austria, France, Norway, USA and Chile in order to enable our board members to take seat before the Los Angeles board meeting. Or we could have waited, thus taken away our communities voices on the upcoming board meeting. We did however manage to select one candidate from each region regionally, and then had a phone meeting earlier on today to confirm the selections. We managed to establish a quorum (5 out of 9 present, and more than 2 out of 3 regions represented) and all votes were unanimous. Wish them good luck, As they may need it, to make sure ICANN becomes what it needs to be to ensure active development of the Internet.
