Request for participation: Internet measurement tool at ISI
Hi all, I got a request from a colleague of mine if I knew sites in the working area of RIPE (note: not just Europe) that might be willing to participate in research regarding Internet measurements that ISI is conducting. Please contact Grig Gheorghiu <grig@ISI.EDU> directly if you are willing/interested to participate by running their Internet measurement tool as described below. Also, feel free to forward this mail to people that you know that might have an interest in this, David K. --- Grig Gheorghiu writes:

Hi, David
This is a short desciption of what the tool, called topologyd, does:
The tool, which runs as a daemon, estimates available network bandwidth and delay among participating sites. Based on these estimates, the tool computes a logical topology connecting the participating sites. Logical link costs are currently set to be the ratio between estimated bandwidth and delay. The tool has an interface that allows the estimates, topology, etc. to be displayed using a web browser, such as Netscape. The initial motivation for the tool was to propagate updates among replicated sites efficiently and in a network-friendly way. Software requirements are SunOS and perl. No special privileges are required for the account.
We already have a group of machines across USA running this tools. The "master" of the group can be found at http://excalibur.usc.edu:9000. It would be very interesting to have some machines in Europe, too. Currently there is only one machine in Europe, in Greece (Crete actually).
Thank you very much, Grig Gheorghiu
P.S. The leader of this project is Dr. Katia Obraczka here at ISI.
