Please re-distribute it or post it on bulletin boards etc as you see fit. +++++ DANTE is a non-profit company set up by the national research networks of 15 European countries to provide them with international services. It is based in Cambridge, UK and currently has a staff of 10. DANTE's principal service is EuropaNET, a multi- protocol (IP, CLNS, X.25) backbone service with access points in 18 countries and 3.5 Mbps transatlantic capacity (to be increased to 10 Mbps in October 1994). DANTE is also active in providing applications services. It operates message handling, directory and SIG support services and has plans to start further information and security services shortly. DANTE now invites applications for posts in the following areas of its activities: Network Operations Applications Support Systems Administration and Support Network Operations: Almost all of DANTE's services, including the separate components of the EuropaNET service, are sub-contracted to specialist third party organisations. The role of operations staff within DANTE is to ensure that effective operational procedures are in place, to monitor the state of the network and to trace problems which are not being dealt with by routine procedures, to monitor the performance of the sub-contractors, to produce reports on the overall performance of services, and to act as a contact of last resort when problems are not being resolved by the sub-contractors. Operations staff work closely with Network Development staff who are responsible for planning extensions to EuropaNET and with staff who have responsibility for the technical content of applications services. Applications Support: DANTE's current applications services are the message handling service, the directory service which continues the services and developments initiated by PARADISE and SIG support. There are plans to introduce new services shortly in the areas of information and security. In all cases, technical initiative and service development is an important part of DANTE's function. A thorough understanding of current technology and of recent developments are required. Systems Administration and Support: DANTE operates a number of Unix and Macintosh systems to provide in- house support for the activities of its staff. A Systems Administrator with a strong Unix background is required to take responsibility for the management and administration of these systems, to deal with suppliers, and to provide first-line support to other members of staff. Although these functions have high priority, they are not expected to represent a full- time load. The Systems Administrator will therefore contribute in addition to network operations or to one of the applications services. Applications are invited for three posts in the areas described above. It is envisaged that one post will be dedicated to Network Operations, one to Applications Support, and that the third will be divided between Systems Administration and one of the other two areas. Candidates must be suitably qualified, they must be capable of showing initiative and of taking a leading role in their field of activity, and they must have recent experience in one or more of the following areas: IP Networking, Network Operations, X.500, Information Systems, Security Services, Systems Management. An understanding of the particular demands imposed by the international research networking community is essential.
