The primary objective of TERENA is the promotion and development of a high quality international information and telecommunications infrastructure to support European research and education. To meet this objective, TERENA has established a Technical Programme which is intended to encourage innovative and collaborative projects, encompassing involvement in the definition of standards, co-ordination with telecommunication operators, industry and governmental bodies. The majority of the work is undertaken by volunteer experts drawn from the TERENA community and organised into Working Groups and Task Forces for specific technical areas and activities. The working language of TERENA and its associated activities is English. The technical work of TERENA concerns the definition and management of leading edge networking projects including wide area ATM development, European Information Infrastructure, security and video conferencing. TERENA also organises a number of European networking conferences, workshops and symposia each year. The Post The TERENA technical staff consists of three Project Development Officers (PDOs) and a Chief Technical Officer who reports to the TERENA Secretary General. The staff work closely with the administrative staff making up a small international team of approximately twelve in the TERENA secretariat office in the centre of Amsterdam. Due to one of the current staff members taking up a position elsewhere, TERENA presently has a vacancy for a self motivated Project Development Officer. The PDO post will be for an initial one year period starting 1 January 1997, at the level of 40 hours per week (100%) in the TERENA Amsterdam office. TERENA offers a competitive package of salary and benefits which may include relocation expenses if appropriate. Duties Project Development Officers play an essential role in the development and co-ordination of the TERENA Technical Programme providing technical and administrative support to the TERENA Technical Committee, the Working Groups and Task Forces. Activities undertaken by the PDOs include participation in Working Group and Task Force meetings, writing of documentation including meeting minutes, overall project management and project co-ordination. Information dissemination through the World Wide Web, other on-line means and preparation of printed material are also important aspects of the PDOs work. There may also be the opportunity to make presentations on the work of TERENA at conferences and to participate in teaching sessions of training workshops. The management of technical projects is however a major component of the duties. The work will inevitably require some degree of travel. Qualifications Candidates should be educated to degree level and have a detailed understanding and experience of advanced computer networking. This should include a working knowledge of Internet and related standards preferably including an understanding of the international networking scene. An understanding of good project management practice from project definition, financial resourcing, definition and monitoring of milestones, through to completion and maintenance would be an advantage. A good knowledge of written and spoken English is essential. Willingness to travel on official business in Europe and possibly beyond is necessary. Further Information Further information on the technical aspects of the job may be obtained from John Dyer, TERENA Chief Technical Officer <dyer@terena.nl>. Applications Applications which must include the names and addresses of two confidential referees should be sent either electronically or in hardcopy to Ms Mina Jansse, TERENA Personnel and Organisation Officer <janssen@terena.nl>, before 1 November 1996. The intention is to hold interviews for short listed candidates in Amsterdam during the week commencing 18th November 1996. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association * * * * TERENA Tel : +31-20-639-1131 * * Singel 466-468 Fax : +31-20-639-3289 * * 1017 AW Amsterdam * * The Netherlands URL: http://www.terena.nl * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
