Updating the priorities for Telematics for Research
There is a need to assess the priorities for the future calls of the Telematics for Research Sector of the EU TELEMATICS APPLICATIONS Research and Technology Development Programme (URL: http://www.echo.lu/telematics/telehome.html). The technical evolution is moving very rapidly and the increasing commercialisation of the Internet technologies adds additional complexity to the setting of priorities for this sector. The main objective is still to promote the development, deployment and utilisation of telematics services and applications for European researchers in order to increase the possibility for collaboration and the overall cost-effectiveness of research. However, it needs to be ensured that EU support is adding value to existing and planned initiatives in this domain, whether funded from national public or commercial sources. Therefore a consultation should allow for an open framework for ideas and suggestions from all actors within the Telematics for Research sector of the programme. We would like to invite you to participate in this and ask you to recommend priorities for future calls for proposals in order to ensure that the available remaining EU funding in this sector can be used in the best possible way with a view to meeting the overall objectives of the initiative. The objective of this exercise is to obtain input for the future evolution of Telematics for Research and correlate this with the existing workplan for the sector, with a view to assigning priorities across the different work sectors. It is not expected that the existing workplan needs to be modified. The main objective will rather be to identify specific RTD topics, within the context of the existing workplan, which have emerged since the previous call and which would be complimentary to the activities of the projects which have already been launched. A small report will be produced which will act as a guide for future proposers and which will also be used as background information for the evaluators used in the evaluation of proposals. The assignment of priorities must be achieved with active participation and consultation of the Telematics for Research sector actors, including user representatives. The report should contain recommendations for priorities relating to the existing tasks within the workplan and identification of new areas of work within the overall scope of the workplan, which should be addressed in the future calls. This should be done while taking into account the current situation, including both EU and non-EU funded activities, and in close consultation with the research community.
