Dear colleagues, In 2021, when reports emerged that hosts in Mexico were unable to reach whatsapp.net, it was determined that middleboxes were to blame. These devices were intercepting the queries to the root instance hosted in China and sending a bogus reply. RFO for RIPE NCC RRDP outage 24 March 2022

Dear colleagues, At 08:03 UTC, we had a short (partial) outage of about 10 minutes, where rrdp.ripe.net could not be resolved in DNS. Rsync and the RPKI dashboard were not affected. The outage happened after our weekly automated switching between our CDN providers. During the switch, we verify if our CDN providers are accessible and resolve correctly. Right after the switch, it appears that there were issues in resolving the CDN host, which resulted in rrdp.ripe.net being inaccessible for a short period of time. This was almost immediately noticed by our monitoring and we reverted the change in DNS, moving rrdp.ripe.net to point back to our secondary CDN provider. We have set the TTL to 60 seconds, so the DNS update was quickly propagated. Timeline: 08:03 UTC: DNS switch 08:10 UTC: The RPKI team gets alerted that rrdp.ripe.net is down 08:20 UTC: Change is reverted We have contacted the CDN provider to investigate what the exact issue is. Hi all! Sharing here as FYI. The impact of this event is very hard to understand. Aspect 1/ BGP routes might be impacted depending on *when* IRR mirror operators remove the ARIN-NONAUTH from their list of sources (as far as I understand ARIN will disable FTP/NRTM access). Commonly used mirror operators are RADB, NTT, Lumen, and of course the local IRRd instances operators might be running to speed up prefix-filter generation. The 'peval' and 'bgpq3' utilities by default point at whois.radb.net, the 'bgpq4' utility by default points at rr.ntt.net. Aspect 2/ Overlapping (less-specific) objects might exist in other databases, masking this event to some degree. All timers in this IRR supply chain are unknown variables. Below is a list of prefixes which *might* be affected, my hope is that this list assists in troubleshooting efforts in the coming days / weeks. Any potential effects are likely to manifest themselves in the coming 24 - 32 hours. Prior to this announcement, ARIN consulted with its community on the future of its IRR service. Dear colleagues, We have now published our quarterly plan for Q2 2022 for RPKI: https://www.ripe.net/manage-ips-and-asns/resource-management/rpki/rpki-plan… <https://www.ripe.net/manage-ips-and-asns/resource-management/rpki/rpki-plan…> We’re still working on the activities we started in Q1 2022, for example implementing "Publish in Parent" RFC 8181 support and creating multiple parallel internal test environments for RPKI. We’ll announce here on the list when these have finished. Our goals are to make it clear what we are working on in the coming months, and also to get discussion around those plans so we can make developments based on community input.
