All,
First of all thanks to Petrit, the co-authors and all who have participated in the discussion around the proposal.
It is what it is. Too bad some voices are apparently heard more then others.
Cheers,
Melchior

2019-08 Policy Proposal Withdrawn (SLURM file for Unallocated and Unassigned RIPE NCC Address Space)
by Petrit Hasani 09 Jul '20
by Petrit Hasani 09 Jul '20
09 Jul '20
Dear colleagues,
The policy proposal 2019-08, "SLURM file for Unallocated and Unassigned RIPE NCC Address Space" has been withdrawn.
This proposal aimed for the RIPE NCC to publish a SLURM file (Simplified Local Internet Number Resource Management with the RPKI), containing assertions with the origin “AS0” for all unallocated and unassigned address space under our control.
The proposal is archived and can be found at:
https://www.ripe.net/participate/policies/archived-policy-proposals/archive…
Reason for withdrawal:
The WG Chair felt that raised concerns remained unaddressed and that there was a strong opposition against the proposal in the community.
Kind regards,

2019-08 Review Phase (SLURM file for Unallocated and Unassigned RIPE NCC Address Space)
by Petrit Hasani 08 Jul '20

Dear colleagues,
Policy proposal 2019-08, “SLURM file for Unallocated and Unassigned RIPE NCC Address Space", is now in the Review Phase.
The proposal aims for the RIPE NCC to publish a SLURM file (Simplified Local Internet Number Resource Management with the RPKI), containing assertions with the origin “AS0” for all unallocated and unassigned address space under our control.
The proposal has been updated following the last round of discussion. Version 3 of the proposal has moved from instructing the RIPE NCC to create ROAs to creating a SLURM file for use with Relying Parties/Validators.
The RIPE NCC has prepared an impact analysis on this latest proposal version to support the community’s discussion.
You can find the proposal and impact analysis at:
https://www.ripe.net/participate/policies/proposals/2019-08
https://www.ripe.net/participate/policies/proposals/2019-08#impact-analysis
And the draft documents at:
https://www.ripe.net/participate/policies/proposals/2019-08/draft
As per the RIPE Policy Development Process (PDP), the purpose of this four week Review Phase is to continue discussion of the proposal, taking the impact analysis into consideration, and to review the full draft RIPE Policy Document.
At the end of the Review Phase, the working group chairs will determine whether the WG has reached rough consensus. It is therefore important to provide your opinion, even if it is simply a restatement of your input from the previous phase.
We encourage you to read the proposal, impact analysis and draft document and send any comments to <routing-wg(a)ripe.net> before 23 June 2020.
Kind regards,

Dear all,
It has been a long journey but thankfully it has come to an end!!!
We are happy to announce that as of today (06/07/2020) GR-IX route servers drop RPKI invalids for both our infrastructures in Athens & Thessaloniki.
GR-IX [1] is a neutral and independent Internet Exchange in Greece, owned and operated by GRNET [2] (the Greek NREN).
Please let us share with you the brief version of the story behind it and any lessons learned.
- GRNET was an early supporter of RPKI. It started by signing ROAs for GRNET and their customers (all Greek Universities and Research Institutes). Moreover, it performed marking on each prefix received for further statistical / monitoring process. In the early days, GRNET was not dropping RPKI invalids, but put those prefixes with lower priority in their routing table.
- GRNET & GR-IX were early supporters of MANRS [3] and successfully became a member of MANRS as a Network Operator & IXP respectively.
- As of 10/2019, GRNET decided to start dropping invalid IPv4 and IPv6 RPKI prefixes received from GR-IX peerings and from GRNET upstream. No major issues were reported until now.
- As of today, GR-IX drops invalid IPv4 & IPv6 RPKI prefixes on their route servers. We are using the BGP large communities proposed by euro-ix [4] in order to mark the prefixes accordingly. We noticed no prefix with RPKI invalid status which hasn't already been filtered by our route servers due to our strict IRRDB filtering.
We would like to thank all our members (GRNET & GR-IX ones) for their help and support in this effort - either via simply signing their ROAs, or by participating in our tech mailing list and discussions we had during various fora. Internet was built of smaller or bigger ecosystems such as ours in Greece, in which we take great pride of its vibrant participation and technical expertise and are happy of being part of it.
We do hope you’re staying safe and healthy during these hard times and wish you a great summer.
Should you need any further information, please do contact us.
Best regards,
Michalis

Hi everyone,
Over the last two years NLnet Labs has been working on free, open source RPKI software and research for the community, supported by the RIPE NCC Community Projects Fund, Brazilian NIR NIC.br and Asia Pacific RIR APNIC. I have an update that we’d like to share.
When creating a ROA in RPKI, it can have an effect on one or more BGP announcements, making them either Valid, Invalid or NotFound. Understanding what exactly determines these three states is not immediately obvious, especially in the beginning.
At times, this can make creating ROAs a bit of a shot in the dark. I’ve seen several examples in the past where an operator created a ROA in their RIR Portal, waited for it to be published and then checked in services like BGPMon or the HE BGP Toolkit to see if everything turned out as expected.
This is why, during my time at the RIPE NCC, we put a lot of work into making it immediately obvious what the effect of a ROA is going to be on the BGP announcements with your address space. Several RIRs have followed in these footsteps since.
I presented on this journey at NANOG 63 in 2015:
https://archive.nanog.org/meetings/abstract?id=2500
Now, in my new adventure at NLnet Labs, we’ve gotten the same team together to make simple, intuitive ROA management for Delegated RPKI available for everyone, seamlessly across RIR regions.
With Krill 0.7.1 ‘Sobremesa’ you can easily create and maintain ROAs in a user interface that incorporates all of the best practices and lessons learned over the last 10 years and monitor them in ways never before possible, such as through Prometheus.

The dangers of demonizing bogons 2019-08 : (Fwd: [ncc-announce] [news] Sanctions and the RIPE NCC: Status Update)

Dear group,
This message is in context of 2019-08 and related policy proposals in other regions of the world. When the RPKI is changed from an "opt-in" to an "no opt-out" mechanism, things will break horribly. Christian's message should make that clear.
Imagine that the sanctions progress in intensity, to a state where RIPE NCC must de-register the resources assigned to the 3 members on the sanctions list. Their resources would stop being assigned, and move into the unassigned pool. This means they'll end up on the SLURM file, and if *you* use that SLURM file you will NOT be able to communicate via the Internet with fellow humans who happened to be born into an unfortunate situation. For this reason I will not use such SLURM files, they have the potential to do far more harm than they are doing me good.

The people in charge will find a way to browse the web anyway (satellite, lease IPs from other places), where stuff like this really hurts is the small people that are trying to find information on the Internet about the state of the world.
Please read the below and ask yourself whether it really is worth it to pursue 2019-08 or related policies in other regions.
Kind regards,
Job

Subject: [ncc-announce] [news] Sanctions and the RIPE NCC: Status Update
Date: Wednesday, June 24, 2020 13:09
Dear members,
I want to briefly update you on the current situation involving sanctions, following my last email back in April[1].
In short, there have been no major developments and the situation is largely unchanged. However, to keep you informed, allow me to briefly run through this again.
STATUS OF EXEMPTION REQUEST AND FROZEN MEMBERSHIPS
In April, we mentioned that the RIPE NCC was seeking an exemption from EU sanctions regulation from the Dutch authorities. The authorities have indicated that their response will take longer than usual, possibly due to the COVID-19 situation. We will inform you when we receive a decision on our request.
For the three members believed to be on the sanctions list, this means that their LIR accounts remain frozen and they remain unable to access RIPE NCC services. While this is not ideal, it does mean that their resources have not been deregistered.
BANK TRANSFERS FROM IRANIAN AND SYRIAN MEMBERS
My earlier email also mentioned that the RIPE NCC's bank had temporarily revoked its ability to receive bank transfers from members in Iran and Syria. Unfortunately, this restriction remains in place and will likely remain so until the RIPE NCC receives a response to its exemption request.
As this will probably take longer than the 1 July payment deadline, the RIPE NCC is looking at ways to address this and will follow up with affected members directly.
RIPE NCC EXECUTIVE BOARD POSITION
This is also unchanged, but I think you'll agree that this is a good thing: "The Executive Board of the RIPE NCC believes that the means of communication should not be affected by political discussions or disputes. This includes the provision of correctly registered Internet numbering resources."[2]
At our board meeting last week, we reaffirmed that the RIPE NCC is committed to pursuing all legal means to continue providing services to all of its members. As we have already stated, we believe the Internet is a critical tool for humanity and should not be affected by political discussions.
I regret that we are not yet able to give a more positive update, we are doing all we can to resolve this issue. If you have any questions or comments for the board, please contact us at <exec-board(a)ripe.net>.
Regards
Christian Kaufmann
