Monday morning at the RIPE 62 meeting, from 9:00 to 12:30, an RPKI workshop will be organized by Randy Bush, Sandy Murphy, and Michael Elkins. Short description of workshop: The RPKI is a system under development in the IETF that provides a secure method for network operators to attest to the network addresses they hold. Attendees at this workshop will have the opportunity to try out the existing open source implementation for producing RPKI certificates and ROAs with their own resources and experience resource requests, sub-allocations, ROA creation, etc. Attendees will also have the opportunity to experiment with use of RPKI data they have created on a real router and see the impact on routing of use of the RPKI. Attendees who want to participate fully should bring a laptop on which to run the software, either natively or in a virtual machine (OSX, BSD, Linux). No registration is required. Launch of the Local Certification Service

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Resource Certification (RPKI) Service was launched on 1 January 2011. Since then, over 570 LIRs have generated a digital certificate in the LIR Portal, listing their Internet number resources. In addition, most LIRs have used it to specify their routing policy through Route Origin Authorisations (ROAs), indicating which Autonomous Systems are authorised to originate the prefixes they hold. Currently, there are thousands of IPv4 and IPv6 prefixes covered by a ROA in our repository, which network operators around the world can validate against. Today marks an important step in the development of this service. We are launching a proof of concept of the Local Certification Service, enabling you to run Resource Certification on your own systems. It will allow you to generate, manage and publish a resource certificate, with the RIPE NCC as parent. If there is broad community interest, we will turn the Local Certification Service into a full-featured production software package. There are two FACTS that we should keep in mind separately: a) the fact that we need an IPv6 migration path (and good motivation) for large systems b) the fact that IPv4 is a scarse resource Regarding b) to me it sounds normal and logical that, for scarse resources, the more you request the more you pay. If we have a cake with 8 slices and 8 kids (poor and rich ones) we cannot decide that if one kid gets the whole cake he will pay LESS.... The more you request, the more you will pay. Regarding point a), I am still curious to know why large ISP did not migrate towards IPv6. Usually when asked about it in the past, the answer I have heard was "we have no reason to move toward IPv6, commercially speaking we have no reason to do it..." Just to give you an idea, 2 years ago (not sure about now), the peering situation in Italy was that small and medium ISPs were doing native IPv6 peering while large ones were not supporting IPv6 or doing it via tunnels. Considering that most of the content stays on the large ISP (p2p and other content (NOTE1) ) even if a small/medium ISP migrates its customers towards IPv6, it will be useless 95% of the content will still be on the IPv4 word. (NOTE1) 1) large providers have many customers, and many customers means a lot of national p2p traffic.
