[news] RIPE NCC Re-Affirms Commitment to Operate K Root Name Server

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC has been providing DNS root name service via k.root-servers.net since 1997. As the global Internet community considers changes to the NTIA oversight of key DNS functions, the RIPE NCC wishes to assure the Internet community that our commitment to providing this service and to coordinating appropriately with ICANN and the other root server operators will not be affected by the outcome of these discussions. The RIPE NCC is a not-for-profit membership association under Dutch law. It is governed by its General Meeting and Executive Board, and is guided by the RIPE community. Root name servers are a crucial part of the Internet DNS infrastructure and the RIPE NCC’s role in this area is supported by the membership for the benefit of the global Internet community. In an open letter to ICANN in 2009, the RIPE NCC affirmed our mutual commitment to coordination of DNS root name service operations, acknowledging that a single, unique DNS root is paramount to the stable operations of the Internet and to ensuring global reachability: https://ripe.net/s/kr2h We remain committed to the principles expressed in this letter, and will continue working to operationalise them, independent of changes to the IANA stewardship. The new, correct document is ripe-622, which deprecates ripe-621. [news] NRO NC Call for Nominations: RIPE NCC Service Region

Dear colleagues, There is a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The NRO NC also performs the role of the ICANN Address Supporting Organization (ASO) Address Council (AC). The term of Wilfried Woeber, who was appointed to the NRO NC by the RIPE NCC Executive Board in November 2011, ends on 31 December 2014. The RIPE NCC Executive Board will select one representative from the nominees to serve a three-year term on the NRO NC beginning 1 January 2015. The decision of the Executive Board will be announced at the RIPE 69 Meeting, which will be held in London from 3-7 November 2014. The deadline for nominations is 8 October 2014. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. There is no limit on the amount of terms someone can serve on the NRO NC. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website. Other individuals may express support for nominated individuals that will be published on the RIPE NCC website. Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Executive Board held its 94th meeting on 19 June 2014. The draft minutes of this meeting are now available, as are the minutes of all Executive Board meetings. [news] Improving Request Forms in the LIR Portal

Dear colleagues, The results of the RIPE NCC Survey 2013 identified resource requests as an area for improvement, and we have received feedback from new LIRs about difficulties with the process of becoming a member and requesting Internet number resources. We believe there is a lot we can do to simplify things, so we are currently working to improve the request forms in the LIR Portal. The goal is to make it easier for members to request resources while streamlining our own internal processes. On Monday, 28 July 2014, we will begin updating the following request forms in the LIR Portal: - IPv4 First Allocation - IPv4 Additional Allocation - IPv6 First Allocation This will be followed by improvements to the other request forms (ASN, IPv6 PI and IXP) over the following two months. There will be no service interruptions at any time and the request forms will remain available throughout this process. Dear colleagues, The ICANN 50 meeting is currently taking place in London, and two sessions scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, 25 June, are of specific relevance to the RIPE community. There are remote participation options available so that those not in London can contribute to these discussions. These sessions look at how to improve the accountability of ICANN, and a discussion on transitioning the NTIA’s stewardship of the IANA functions. These sessions represent an important milestone in the ongoing global process to develop a plan for transition of the NTIA’s oversight function to the multi-stakeholder community. Dear colleagues, This is a call for presentation proposals for the ENOG 8/RIPE NCC Regional Meeting, that will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan on 9 September 2014. http://www.enog.org/meetings/enog-8/ *Submit a Topic* Traditionally, key themes for ENOG are peering, operational practices and collaboration between Internet service providers (ISPs). We welcome presentations sharing operational experience in these areas and focusing on technical, architectural and coordination aspects of the deployment, maintenance and operations of Internet technologies in networks and systems. Addresses from this block will be distributed at a greatly reduced rate, according to policies established by the LACNIC community. [news] RIPE NCC Receives Allocation from IANA's Recovered IPv4 Pool

Dear colleagues, Yesterday, on 20 May 2014, the RIPE NCC and other Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) were allocated what will likely be one of the last significant blocks of IPv4 addresses we receive from the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). Each RIR received the equivalent of a /11 of IPv4 address space. The RIPE NCC was allocated the IPv4 address range 45.128.0.0/11 and we are currently adding this to our available pool. Following the exhaustion of IANA's free pool of IPv4 addresses in 2011, when the RIRs received their final /8s, a global policy caused IANA to create a recovered pool of leftover and returned IPv4 address blocks. This policy was ratified by all five RIR communities in 2012 and stated that IANA would begin making equal, periodic allocations from the recovered pool when the first RIR reached a /9 of remaining addresses. This point was reached by LACNIC, the RIR for Latin America and the Caribbean yesterday, which triggered the global policy and thus the first post-exhaustion allocation from IANA. Dear members, The RIPE NCC General Meeting took place from Wednesday, 14 May to Thursday, 15 May 2014. Members voted on five resolutions and in the RIPE NCC Executive Board elections. We published a voting report that details the voting counts and provides a verification page where electronic voters can use their voting receipts to verify that their votes were recorded correctly.
