Resource Certification/RPKI Workshop at RIPE 63

RIPE 63 attendees interested in Resource Certification/RPKI are encouraged to take part in a workshop on Monday, 31 October from 9:30-12:30 in the Park Congress 2+3 rooms. ===================== What you'll learn ===================== The workshop will focus on BGP Origin Validation, based on the Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI). You will learn how RPKI enables network operators to make more reliable routing decisions and how it protects against accidental mis-origination, the most common routing error we see today. Using various open-source tools from rpki.net and the RIPE NCC, you will be able to set up a resource certificate and create Route Origin Authorisation (ROA) objects, stating which Autonomous Systems are authorised to originate the prefixes you hold. After publishing your ROAs, you can validate them and configure routers to set routing preferences based on the RPKI status of your prefixes. This workshop will be a collaboration between Rob Austein, Randy Bush, Michael Elkins, Benno Overeinder (NLNet Labs), Jac Kloots (SURFnet), Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks and the RIPE NCC. ========================= Participation Details ========================= You do not need to register for this workshop. There are no prerequisites for using the rpki.net tools. In order to generate a certificate and configure ROAs on the RIPE NCC pilot server, you'll need to have an LIR Portal user account with access to the certification system or know the administrator credentials for your LIR Portal account. Register for Electronic Voting on RIPE NCC General Meeting Resolutions

Dear colleagues, There is one week left to register for electronic voting at the upcoming RIPE NCC General Meeting (GM) in Vienna on 2 November 2011. If you have not yet registered, you will receive an email from the RIPE NCC inviting you to register for electronic voting with the BigPulse system. You should follow the instructions in the invitation email if you wish to register for electronic voting. Electronic voting will be facilitated for all GM resolutions. The resolutions are available in the draft agenda at: http://www.ripe.net/lir-services/ncc/gm/november-2011/draft-agenda The supporting documents for the GM are available at: http://www.ripe.net/lir-services/ncc/gm/november-2011/documents The voting period will begin after the resolutions are presented to the membership on 2 November and will remain open until 3 November at 14:00 (UTC +1). The extended voting period will give members in all time zones in the RIPE NCC service region adequate time to cast their votes. The RIPE NCC uses BigPulse, a third party that specialises in web-based voting solutions, to conduct the poll. The deadline to register for electronic voting is 19 October 2011 at 23:59 (UTC). RIPE NCC General Meeting November 2011: Agenda and Supporting Documents

Dear RIPE NCC member, The draft agenda and supporting documents for the RIPE NCC General Meeting (GM) November 2011 have now been published. It will be held adjacent to the RIPE 63 Meeting, which takes place from 31 October-4 November 2011. The GM will consist of two parts: - The RIPE NCC Services Working Group will begin at 16:00 (UTC +1) and will include the presentation of the Report from the RIPE NCC. This part of the GM is open to everyone. - The second part of the GM follows immediately after and is open only to RIPE NCC members who have registered for the GM. This part of the meeting is the forum where RIPE NCC members can discuss the operations and activities of the RIPE NCC and exercise their voting rights. For this GM, the Executive Board will allow electronic voting for all resolutions. The voting period will begin on Wednesday, 2 November according to the GM agenda and will remain open until 14:00 (UTC +1) on Thursday, 3 November. The GM voting period will continue but the physical meeting will be postponed until 15:45 (UTC +1) on Thursday, when the Chairman of the GM will announce the results of the votes on the GM resolutions. The Executive Board is extending the voting period for this GM to make it as convenient as possible for RIPE NCC members in the entire RIPE NCC service region to cast their votes. The GM will be webcast, so all RIPE NCC members will be able to follow proceedings and have time to vote on all resolutions. Verify your LIR Portal email address before 17 October 2011

Dear Colleagues, We are in the process of rolling out RIPE NCC Access. This will enable you to access various RIPE NCC services using just one password instead of having to sign in to each tool or service separately. We've already enabled RIPE NCC Access for IS Alarms and the next service scheduled for migration is the LIR Portal. Because this is our most used service, it is likely that you will soon have a RIPE NCC Access account. Because RIPE NCC Access uses your email address as your username, the email address that is currently associated with your LIR Portal account will become your new RIPE NCC Access username. This username can then be used to log into IS Alarms and the LIR Portal and other services as they are migrated to RIPE NCC Access. Please log into the LIR Portal and verify your email address in the top right corner. If you would like to use a different email address than the one displayed for your RIPE NCC Access account, please contact your LIR Portal Administrator and ask them to update it before 17 October, 2011, to ensure a smooth migration. RIPE NCC Listing Service: Streamlining Resource Transfers

Dear Colleagues, As described in section 5.5 of RIPE policy, ripe-524 "Address Allocation and Assignment Policies for the RIPE NCC Service Region", RIPE NCC members are able to transfer Internet number resources to another member after RIPE NCC approval and based on demonstrated need. As the RIPE NCC's pool of available IPv4 addresses depletes, we expect that the number of members wanting to transfer resources will increase. In order to streamline the transfer process, we are launching the RIPE NCC Listing Service. The Listing Service enables members to offer the address blocks they hold and no longer need. Members who want to acquire IPv4 address space can browse the list and request a transfer under the current policy. Reminder: NRO NC Call for Nominations - RIPE NCC Service Region

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, This is a reminder that there is a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The term of Wilfried Woeber, who was appointed to the NRO NC by the RIPE NCC Executive Board in October 2008, ends on 31 December 2011. The RIPE NCC Executive Board will select one representative from the nominees to serve a three-year term on the NRO NCC beginning 1 January 2012. The decision of the Executive Board will be announced at the RIPE 63 Meeting, which will be held in Vienna from 31 October-4 November 2011. The deadline for nominations is 5 October 2011. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. There is no limit on the amount of terms someone can serve on the NRO NC. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website. Other individuals may express support for nominated individuals that will be published on the RIPE NCC website. Launch of RIPE NCC Access

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, To improve the usability of our services, we are deploying a new user account system called RIPE NCC Access. It will allow you to use a single set of credentials to access most of our services. This means that all users of our various services will be asked to migrate or update their current login credentials to a new scheme, using your email address and a password of your choice. We will roll out RIPE NCC Access gradually. The first service to adopt this functionality is IS Alarms. All current IS Alarms users will receive an email with instructions on how to set up their RIPE NCC Access account. From Thursday, 15 September 2011, IS Alarms users will not be able to log in with their old credentials. In the following months, other services such as the LIR Portal, DNSMON and RIPE Atlas will follow. We will keep you updated on the progress. We are certain RIPE NCC Access will offer simplified and unified access to our services and improve the overall user experience. Enhancements on LIR Portal Today (16:00-19:00 UTC)

A more robust X.509 login system, known as Identity Certificate Login 2. LIR Portal X.509 Authentication change

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, This announcement applies to any LIR Portal users that currently sign in using an X.509 certificate in their browser. On Tuesday, 6 September, the RIPE NCC will deploy an update to the LIR Portal, replacing the existing X.509 login system with a new, more robust and easier to maintain platform. The update will also make a fundamental change to user management. In the current system, any user can decide to generate and use an identity certificate to log in; under the new system, it will be up to the LIR Portal administrator to allow that LIR's users to login using X.509 certificates. There will be an article published on RIPE Labs around the time of deployment that will will go into greater detail about these changes. For now, however, it is important to note that: 1. The upgrade will mean that on 6 September, users currently accessing the LIR portal via X.509 certificates will no longer be able to do so. All users will still be able to access the LIR Portal using their RegID, username and password. 2. Users wishing to access the LIR Portal using an X.509 identity certificate will need to generate a new certificate. If you are not the LIR Portal administrator, you will need to have your administrator generate a certificate for you. Details on this process will be included in the RIPE Labs article. NRO NC Call for Nominations - RIPE NCC Service Region

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear colleagues, There is a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC). The term of Wilfried Woeber, who was appointed to the NRO NC by the RIPE NCC Executive Board in October 2008, ends on 31 December 2011. The RIPE NCC Executive Board will select one representative from the nominees to serve a three-year term on the NRO NCC beginning 1 January 2012. The decision of the Executive Board will be announced at the RIPE 63 Meeting, which will be held in Vienna from 31 October-4 November 2011. The deadline for nominations is 5 October 2011. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. There is no limit on the amount of terms someone can serve on the NRO NC. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website. Other individuals may express support for nominated individuals that will be published on the RIPE NCC website. New RIPE NCC Charging Scheme Models: Feedback Required

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Executive Board will present a new Charging Scheme to the membership at the RIPE NCC General Meeting (GM) to be held in Vienna on 2 November 2011. The Executive Board is working with the RIPE NCC Senior Management on various options that could be included in the Charging Scheme. It would like to solicit feedback from members on two Charging Scheme models before deciding on a final version to present at the GM. The two models are based on established RIPE NCC organisational principles. Both models, as well as an explanation of the models' features and differences, are presented at: https://www.ripe.net/lir-services/ncc/gm/november-2011/ripe-ncc-proposed-ne… The RIPE NCC Executive Board welcomes any feedback on the proposed models. Take part online now at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GlobalIPv6survey2011 This survey has been designed by GNKS Consult in collaboration with TNO and the RIPE NCC to further understand where the community stands on IPv6 and what needs be done to ensure that the Internet community is ready for the widespread adoption of IPv6. Anyone can participate in this survey and we hope that the results will establish a comprehensive view of current IPv6 penetration and future plans for IPv6 deployment. The survey comprises 23 questions and can be completed in about 15 minutes. For those without IPv6 allocations or assignments or who have not yet deployed IPv6, there will be fewer questions. LIR Portal: Manage Your Communication Preferences

Dear Colleagues, In response to feedback from RIPE NCC members, you can now decide for yourself whether you would like to receive a printed copy of the RIPE NCC Annual Report. All members will be *opted out* of receiving a printed copy of the Annual Report by default. Members can indicate that they would like to receive a printed copy by selecting the "Communication Preferences" option in LIR Portal menu and choosing "Yes please, I'd like to receive a printed copy of the Annual Report". Your preferences can be changed at any time. The Annual Report is available to anyone online and members will be notified of each new edition via the ncc-announce(a)ripe.net mailing list.
