NRO and ICANN Reaffirm Commitment to Relationship

Dear Colleagues, In December 2007, the Number Resource Organization (NRO) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) exchanged letters reaffirming their commitment to formalizing the legal relationship between the two organizations. The NRO letter, jointly-signed by the executives of the five Regional Internet Registries, stated the NRO's commitment to supporting ICANN, sought ICANN's acknowledgement of certain aspects of the role of the NRO, and committed to a deadline of one (1) year for formalizing the legal arrangements between the two organizations. In the letter sent by ICANN to the NRO, Dr. Paul Twomey, President/CEO of ICANN, identified ICANN's commitments to the NRO and re-acknowledged the roles of the Address Supporting Organization (ASO), the NRO, and the RIRs as described in the ASO Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Dr. Twomey also committed ICANN to working with the NRO to finalize the legal arrangements between the two organizations within the one year timeframe. The NRO thanks Dr. Twomey and ICANN for its commitment to bringing this process to a close in the coming year and looks forward to working together for the benefit of all concerned and the continued stability of management and allocation of Internet Number Resources. Fixed maintenance window for LIR Portal: Wednesdays 16:00-19:00,(UTC)

Dear Colleagues, We are working on the LIR Portal and back-end systems at the RIPE NCC. Due to this work, we need to perform regular upgrades to our services and this may involve some downtime for the LIR Portal. We have been planning these upgrades on a case-by-case basis, but we believe it would be easier for everyone if there was a regular, fixed maintenance window where possible. Such a window already exists for maintenance of the RIPE Database, so we will use the same window for the LIR Portal: Wednesdays, 16:00-19:00 (UTC) Uptime of the LIR Portal will not be guaranteed during the maintenance window, although we will of course try to minimise downtime. Unscheduled LIR Portal outage

Dear Colleagues The LIR Portal and related services have experienced several short outages in recent days. This was due to an unsuccessful upgrade of our production servers. All LIR Portal services were down for approximately one hour from 16:00 (UTC) on Wednesday, 21 November, and from 10:00 - 15:00 (UTC) on Thursday, 22 November. The New LIR Registration Wizard remained unavailable until approximately 16:30 (UTC) on Thursday, due to some extra maintenance tasks. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the meeting takes place from 12-15 November, 2007. During the four-day meeting, over 1,500 participants from around the world representing governments, the private sector, academia, the technical community and international organisations will discuss the most important issues related to the Internet. The RIPE NCC is participating in this event as part of the Number Resource Organization (NRO). NRO Report: "Continuing Cooperation"

[Apologies for duplicates] Dear Colleagues The Number Resource Organization (NRO) has participated in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and related activities since the beginning, and it is a process to which the RIPE NCC and all other RIRs are strongly devoted. In response to the Tunis WSIS agenda, the NRO has released "Continuing Cooperation - The NRO's Role in Internet Governance". This report illustrates the many efforts the Regional Internet Registries undertake in order to maintain and develop the Internet and its unique characteristics. The report focuses on the major themes of the 2007 Internet Governance Forum (IGF): Access, Diversity, Openness, Security and Critical Internet Infrastructure. The report was distributed this week at the IGF in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RIPE 55: Short Meeting Report

[Apologies for duplicate e-mails.] Dear Colleagues, The RIPE 55 Meeting took place from 22-26 October, 2007 at the Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam. There were 375 attendees from 40 countries, including representatives from AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC and ICANN, making it the most well attended RIPE Meeting ever held. Highlights ======== Resolution on IPv4 Depletion ---------------------------- Following discussion in several RIPE Working Groups, the RIPE community agreed to issue a statement on IPv4 depletion and the deployment of IPv6. This statement, "RIPE Community Resolution on IPv4 Depletion and Deployment of IPv6", was developed by consensus and will be used as the community's formal position regarding IPv4 depletion. The statement was presented in the Closing Plenary by the Address Policy Working Group Co-Chair, Sander Steffann (Computel Standby). The statement can be found online at: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/ripe-55/presentations/steffan-resolution.… On Tuesday afternoon, the dedicated IPv4 Depletion session took place, which included a lively discussion. Policy Development ------------------ The RIPE Address Policy Working Group asked the RIPE NCC to begin preparations for the implementation of proposal 2007-01, "Direct Internet Resource Assignments to End Users from the RIPE NCC" if it is subsequently approved by the community on the Address Policy mailing list. Kurtis Lindquist (Netnod), RIPE NCC Services Working Group Co-Chair, presented the RIPE Policy Development Process (PDP) Appeals Process on behalf of all the Working Group Chairs.
