Notifications about older software probe versions
Dear all, especially software probe hosts, Many of you contribute to RIPE Atlas by running one or more software probes. Thank you for doing so! In the case of software probes you, the host, are in control of the installation and upgrade process. We noticed that there are many probes that have been installed, but not upgraded over time. We'd like to inform you that early next week we'll activate a feature in the system where we'll periodically remind software probe hosts with non-newest versions to upgrade their probes. We expect that at some point later we'll also start enforcing the use of newer versions. Please note that since we provide multiple binary releases, it's also possible to set up automatic package updates for the popular platforms (Debian, RHEL, Raspberry). We'd recommend using this feature (in general, not necessarily just for the probe package). You can find full upgrade instructions for the supported platforms at https://github.com/RIPE-NCC/ripe-atlas-software-probe#upgrading Regards, Robert Kisteleki, for the RIPE Atlas team

I was hoping to see some hints specifically for Turris Omnia. Perhaps it's not a popular enough platform to be supported? /Niall

Unfortunately we don't have explicit indications if which ones are on Turris (most other platforms give an indication). It's certainly not a large portion of probes at the moment. In any case, I opened a channel to the Turris people to facilitate this upgrade on their platform. Cheers, Robert

One click on the reForis Packages page, 10 minutes RTFM, 5 cli commands on the Turris (via ssh), and 1017517 seems to be working. el On 2026/09/09 09:20, Eberhard W Lisse wrote:

Sure. But the status page for that probe https://atlas.ripe.net/probes/1017517/overview shows FIRMWARE VERSION 5080 (capitals from copy-paste; not my shouting). The page which Robert referenced, which shows instructions for upgrading, indicates that this version should be upgraded, but doesn't give instructions for the Turris platform. Reforis indicates that no update is available. /Niall

So it didn't just concern Turris routers, but OpenWrt as well, since Turris OS is based on top of OpenWrt. Similar thread: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/new-package-for-ripe-atlas/253808/ Anyway, over the weekend I looked into it, prepared the update from the current version, tested it, and the newer version is now already part of OpenWrt 24.10*, OpenWrt 25.12*, as well as OpenWrt daily snapshots. * within 24-48 hours once built I expect it will make its way into Turris OS with the next update, most likely Turris OS 9.1.4. It will be interesting to see how many SW probes get updated over the next few days, or rather weeks. :) ~ Josef
But alas, My small probes running OpenWRT on the cheap but adequate TP-Link travel router HW have too limited memory capacity for newer OpenWRT and Atlas updates :-( They function fine but now have to be binned. Such is the price for progress I guess. Met vriendelijke groet / Regards, Ernst J. Oud

Good day We dev team, With recent emails about probe/anchor versions to be up to date, especially the software/virtual probes where the owners/hosts needs to update them “manually”, I went checking to see, but I haven’t found a page with my probes/anchors and their versions, and the “Expected” current/stable/test versions to be updateable too. perhaps also system tags “OldFirmware” and/or “NewFirmwareAvailable” and/or “Stale/oldFirmwre” ? --- On 8 Sep 2026, at 11:54, Robert Kisteleki wrote:
