Dear All, below is the hostcount for June 2001. The table shows an increase since last month of over 940,000 (or 6,6%) to a total of over 15,200,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The nl domain shows the highest increase for June with approximately 696,000 hosts more than in May. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/hostcount/ - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - - A number of domains that have been excluded for a while because AXFR's were not possible, have been counted again: bf, bj, cf, dj, dz, gm, gq, im, ne, so and td - Due to another filesystem problem, a small percentage of the following domains didn't get counted: gr, hr, il, kg, ro, se and uk - After a rather long time, we managed to get new data for uk, although not complete due to the point mentioned above. Dear Colleagues, It is our pleasure to open registration for the RIPE 40 meeting, to be held from 1 October - 5 October 2001 at the Prague Congress Center, Czech Republic. More information about this meeting and accommodations can be found on this page: http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/current/ripe-40/ Online registration will open on 16 July and close on 21 September 2001. On-site registration will open on Monday 1 October 2001 at 8.00 a.m. Please note the following: To avoid waiting queues at the registration desk on-site we encourage pre-payment by credit card. The registration fee for this meeting is EUR 350.00 (this includes refreshments and lunches) and the dinner fee is EUR 65.00. However, if payment is received before 21 September 2001, the pre-payment cut-off date, you will receive a pre-registration discount of EUR 50.00. Therefore, the fee for attendees paying before the cut-off date is EUR 300.00 for the meeting and 65.00 EUR for the RIPE dinner event. The pt domain shows the highest increase for May with approximately 100,000 hosts more than in April. Dear all, [apologies for duplicate mails] During the INET conference, that took place last week in Stockholm, Brian Carpenter presented this year's Jonathan Postel Award to Daniel Karrenberg. To quote from the Internet Society's website: >The Jonathan B. Postel Service Award was established by the Internet >Society to honor a person who has made outstanding contributions in >service to the data communications community. It is named for Dr. Jonathan >B. Postel to recognize and commemorate the extraordinary stewardship >exercised by Jon over the course of a thirty year career in networking. Daniel, whom many of you know as one of the founding members of RIPE, and who conceived the concept of the RIPE NCC, and served as its General Manager from 1992 to 1999, was commended for his nearly 20 year long involvement with networking and the Internet in Europe, and for his continuously selfless contributions to the Internet community. It is with special delight that we congratulate Daniel today, and wish him equal success during the coming decades! The table shows an increase since last month of over 180,000 (or 1.3%) to a total of almost 13,860,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The ru domain shows the highest increase for April with approximately 100,000 hosts more than in March. DISI presentation: Olaf Kolkman - RIPE NCC "DISI & DNSSEC on the reverse tree" slides are at: http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/pub-services/np/DISI//Talks/0105_DISI Questions: Q: Why don't you use IPv6? A: Because we want to gain experience first. Q: What about the 192.168.? A: -XXX- Q: What can an end user do to make his ISP secure their zone? A: We want to convince the ISP's to deploy this. Q: What kind of public key system used? A: RSA is recommended, in theory all protocol can be used in parallel. But to get real success we have to choose one. That probably will be RSA. Q: How easily can we go to another encryption protocol, if for example one encryption scheme gets cracked. A: Depending on how long signatures are valid, a change of the protocol can be done within 1 day. But this depends on a lot of parameters. Q: Is there enough experience yet to determine how much effort it is to do actual implementation of this. A: Takes more CPU power for signing. Packet sizes grow. ---- 4. The future HU asks how to go ahead with this, whether to create a new working group, join an existing working group etc. There are more issues related to security DoS, IPv6, Spam. Q: [chair of Anti-Spam WG] Is a merge going on between the various security-related WG's? A1: Not that we are aware off. A2: We want to keep them seperate. HU asks for a chair. No response. He will setup a mailing list. --- 8. AOB OK offers to give an experimental presentation about DNNSEC. This presentation is still under development and will be given in the future.
