There is increasing evidence that a large part of the Internet's impact comes from the manufacturing, deployment, and recycling of hardware, suggesting that networks could substantially reduce their footprint by keeping network devices in operation for longer, despite possibly higher energy consumption in older hardware models. Some of my ongoing research aims to assess whether this hypothesis is correct; happy to tell you more about that if you are interested. Assuming it is indeed correct that network hardware should be kept in operation for longer, if we want to encourage this, we must understand why networks are being upgraded today. * What are the main motives behind network hardware upgrades nowadays? * What factors are preventing or discouraging longer hardware lifetime in networks? We prepared a short survey to help answer those questions. After some brief contextualization questions to clarify the network type and context, the core of the survey presents a list of possible motives for hardware upgrades and asks, for each, how important it typically is in your own network upgrades. The second half of the survey contains (optional) questions related to the current environmental sustainability practices in your organization. Jaap Akkerhuis receives knighthood for his Internet pioneer contributions

Dear colleagues, I am pleased to share the news that Jaap Akkerhuis has been appointed Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion, one of the Netherlands’ highest civilian honours for people who have provided outstanding service to society. Throughout his career, Jaap has been a deeply engaged and longstanding member of the RIPE community. He co-founded and co-chaired the RIPE DNS Working Group for many years. Jaap is a great source of expertise and has always been happy to share his knowledge. BGP Stuck Routes Operational Experience Survey

Dear RIPE community members, We are researchers from Georgia Tech investigating the phenomenon of BGP stuck routes (also known as "zombie routes")—prefixes that persist in routing tables despite being withdrawn by their origin AS. While recent research using BGP beacons (including our work presented at IMC 2025 [1]) confirms that zombie routes occur regularly and can persist for long periods, there is a gap in understanding the operational reality of this issue. We observe the data, but we need to hear from operators to understand the real-world impact and their mitigation responses. We invite you to participate in a brief, anonymous survey to help us assess the extent and impact of this phenomenon in operational settings and to identify common practices for mitigating it. Felipe Victolla Silveira Leaving the RIPE NCC

Dear colleagues, I would like to inform you that after 13 years at the RIPE NCC, Felipe Victolla Silveira is stepping down as CTO and will be leaving the RIPE NCC. Felipe has made a significant contribution to the organisation over the years, holding a number of key roles. Starting in 2012 as a Software Engineer, Felipe then became Software Engineering Manager before joining our Executive Team as Chief Operations Officer with responsibility for the Registry and our Business Applications, including the LIR Portal. Notably, Felipe served as Interim Managing Director from October 2019 to May 2020, ensuring stability through the leadership transition from Axel Pawlik to me. For the past three years, Felipe has further contributed to the development of the RIPE NCC and the resilience of our core services in the role of Chief Technology Officer. During his time with us, Felipe played an important role in shaping both our technical direction and organisational development. His achievements include leading the modernisation of our ticketing system and the phase-out of XRTT, and implementing automation that accelerated the overhaul of our sanctions compliance processes. Felipe also worked closely with the community to define our service criticality and how that should lead to the use of third-party services, continually revisiting that decision in light of changing external factors and community input. He contributed to our achieving ISAE 3000 / SOC 2 compliance for RPKI, and during his tenure, we strengthened the high availability and resiliency of RPKI services. We also modernised the RIPE Atlas infrastructure, including the Hadoop cluster migration to Hetzner. We are grateful for Felipe’s dedication, leadership and the lasting impact of his work across the organisation and the community. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
