Folks, Another hostcount, in time this time ;-) - Quite a few new top level domains: cy - Cyprus cz - Czech Republic eg - Egypt ge - Georgia li - Liechtenstein mt - Malta sk - Slovak Republic tr - Turkey - All the countries that have less hosts now have been re-counted, but did not improve. - Reasonable increase of slightly over 10,000 hosts to just over 366,000. - The full zone output for all countries can again be found on ftp.ripe.net:/ripe/hostcount. - Total History again appended below. Mike, I take your point ref: the differences between AFS sharing v. FTP access. And yes, I think members of RIPE are aware of the potential savings esp. here in Europe where bandwidth tends to be very expensive. Then there is also the matter of educating end users - that would also help and I feel we've not done a great job of it. Hank Nussbacher just sent me figures from the April Internet Hunt results, indicating that Switzerland, Denmark and Finland each sent more data into the NSF backbone than they retrieved from it. The figures weren't broken down by service, but I suspect this is because of FTP. If any network admins in Europe have more information on this, I would be interested in hearing. It sounds like an ideal opportunity to cache FTP traffic. FYI, Peter Danzig, Rick Hall, and I recently completed a study about FTP caching, showing that reasonable sized caches placed at network entry points could reduce FTP traffic by 42%. It's sort of "common knowledge" that the traffic out of Finland is always a lot more than traffic to Finland, and indeed this is due to the ftp archives they have there. So I would say that we do have an excellent cache in Europe (Finland).
