NRO Statements on WSIS Phase II and Internet Governance

[Apologies for duplicates] Dear colleagues In advance of the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia, the Number Resource Organization (NRO) has published two important statements. The first is a direct statement about WSIS Phase II and what the NRO is hoping to achieve. The second statement, addressed to representatives of all governments across the world, presents the NRO positions as they relate to the topic of Internet Governance. The RIPE NCC encourages all those in this community to become familiar with the documents and to make their opinions known to those in positions of authority within their organisations and their representative governments. RIPE NCC Participating in Internet Pavilion at WSIS Exhibition

[Apologies for duplicates] Dear Colleagues, The purpose of this e-mail is to inform you of the RIPE NCC's participation as part of the Number Resource Organization (NRO) at the Internet Pavilion during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Exhibition. During Phase 2 of the WSIS in Tunis, 16-18 November 2005, the NRO will be participating in the Internet Pavilion (http://www.nro.net/archive/news/WSIS-leaflet11.pdf) at the ICT4all exhibition. The RIPE NCC is participating in the Internet Pavilion as part of its continued efforts to support and represent the interests of its membership and the RIPE community to Internet industry groups and government. The main goal of these activities remains the promotion of the open, bottom-up, industry self-regulatory structure common to all Regional Internet Registry (RIR) communities in managing Internet address resources. The Internet Pavilion will bring together a number of the key organisations that are, among other industry partners, responsible for both day-to-day management and policy development in the Internet sphere. Through the Internet Pavilion, we hope to work together with WSIS participants to promote a greater understanding of existing Internet governance mechanisms and how these relate to the recommendations of the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) Final Report and wider WSIS principles. (Follow up) Planned network maintenance 3-11-2005

[Apologies for duplicate e-mails] Dear Colleagues, We have completed planned maintenance work on one of our border routers that was causing network problems. Unfortunately, the work took longer than expected and we encountered some problems that affected our network connectivity and some of our services. We are pleased to announce that we have now resolved the problems and everything is back to normal. More details: During the replacement of one of our routers, we discovered that MD5 passwords became corrupt, leading to broken peering sessions. By the close of business on 4 November, we had re-established 90% of sessions. On 5 November, we completed the planned maintenance and rebooted the router. This reboot caused the RIPE NCC network to become unreachable by that part of the Internet that preferred a BGP path to the router. We detected and resolved the issue by 18.30 UTC on 6 November. All peering sessions are now restored. Packet loss, which lead to the original decision to replace the router, has disappeared. The TTM and RIS services were affected by the network incident during the weekend. After this was resolved, data collection started again and due to the resilient design of the system, no data was lost. We apologise for any convenience this may have caused. Planned network maintenance 3-11-2005

Dear Colleagues, This is to let you know that we will carry out planned network maintenance tomorrow, Thursday, 3 November from 20:00 to 22:00 UTC. We don't expect this to disrupt any RIPE NCC services, though you may notice some small delays. This maintenance is necessary after a high load on one of our border routers caused some service disruption on 29 September 2005. Since then, we have made configuration changes to improve load balancing between the border routers. Unfortunately this has not been as beneficial as we had hoped, and the load continues to increase. The router is approaching its maximum capacity. We have decided to replace the router with a more powerful one. We apologise for inconvenience this may cause. RIPE NCC Service Interruption on 29 September

Dear Colleagues, As we announced on 29 September, there was an unexpected disruption to our whois and web services between 05:10 and 06:00 UTC. Our investigations have shown that the problem was caused by an increasing traffic load and a growing number of peers on one of our routers. We made some configuration changes to improve load balancing between our border routers. This should prevent any similar problems from occurring in the future.
