Everyone, Please find below the RIPE DNS hostcount for April 1994. - Portugal has been added to the list of countries that are counted not centrally from Amsterdam, but from within the country. Announcing the first PRIDE course --------------------------------- This is a preliminary announcement for the forthcoming PRIDE course. The course will be based around the first edition of the PRIDE guide (to be available within the next two weeks). The course will be a one day course. The course is aimed at Service Providers with the following benefits: o Gain a better understanding of routing policy techniques. o Understanding of the concept of a Routing Registry. o Learn how to use/maintain routing policy information in the routing registry. o Learn how to use the PRIDE tools to diagnose and check routing policy problems. o Give Service Providers a chance to feedback ideas on the routing registry and the tools that are needed now and in the future. This will be a "first" course and participant feedback will be appreciated. It will also give participants a firsthand look at newest developments around the routing registry and associated tools. This first course will be held here in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, time does not permit this to be held in conjunction with the RIPE meeting. The proposed dates fall into three options. Option 1: Monday 30th May 09:30 - 17:00 Option 2: Monday 30th May 13:00 - Tuesday 31st May 12:00 Option 3: Tuesday 31st May 09:30 - 17:00 The course will be funded by the PRIDE project and thus be free of charge. Space is limited and reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. The definite times will be announced by 14th May. Attendees from the PRIDE funding organisations will be given preference. RIPE Connectivity Document Store starting

Dear colleagues, Let me invite all network service providers/operators in Europe to fill and send to <cds-editor(a)ripe.net> short descriptions of their network to be stored in the RIPE Connectivity Document Store (CDS). This will be a new unified way of publishing basic information about european connectivity. Every network in Europe is free and willcome to publish it's fact-sheet. The CDS is accessible by WWW (http://www.ripe.net/ripe/cds.html) ftp, gopher and the description fact-sheets can also be retrieved by mail. The CDS is be closely related to the RIPE map repository (there are hypertext links between the textual descriptions of the network and their maps (if supplied). A detailed description of the layout, the procedures as well as an example of filled fact sheet (thanks to UNICOM Bulgaria) can be found in ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/drafts/connectivity-report-plan.txt. <cds-editor(a)ripe.net> and all users and potential users in the world are waiting impatiently for your fact-sheets (and maps :-). It is so simple to have the others know about you a little bit more and RIPE NCC as the European Internet registry is the best appropriate place where people go for information. Aggregation

Dear operations people! As you should know, the Internet is suffering from routing table explosion and it is only a questin of time until major routers which need a full routing table run out of resources. It is necessary to start aggregation *now*! Based on the current full routing table we compute the possible gain if aggregation is done at the AS level. This computation assumes that no holes will be created, i.e. aggregates do not include currently unannounced networks. All ASes should be able to achieve almost all the savings assumed by this computation. Please go ahead, start aggregating and remove the more specific announcements. This is a question of avoiding a big bang which will be desastrous to the Internet (industry). Think globally, act locally! These statistics and others are computed daily and can be retrieved from directory ftp.ripe.net:cidr/stats as long as the Internet continues to work. RIPE 17 actions status report - APRIL reminder

Below is the list of action items from the RIPE meeting (and previously). The actions are grouped into two different categories: "Done" and "Open". If you are on the list with an action against your name, would you please reply confirming the status of that action : ie. whether it has been "Done" (hopefully) or whether it is still "Open", with an expected approx date for completion, if possible. This list is in response to a number of requests from people for more support and continuity of work items between meetings. It is the third reminder to be sent out and there will be one more reminder only. The last list will be generated one week from the next RIPE meeting - Monday 9th May. Thanks, Anne ---------- Action List - RIPE 17 ===================== 1. Done Action: 16.21 Milan Sterba, Anne Lord Produce the umbrella document for the CDS. Action: 16.23 Milan Sterba, NCC Create the cds-editor(a)ripe.net alias and establish procedures to integrate new CDS contributions and maps to the CDS. Action: 17.2 Daniel Karrenberg Propose (guarded) RIPE database object representing a local registry, mail to local-ir and db wg. Action: 17.5 Daniel Karrenberg Ask IANA for a default range of AS numbers (65530-65535 or so) in the line of the network-10 proposal. Reply was negative. Action: 16.18 NCC Try to actually get the synchronisation of the various database going, using the recently agreed DB Exchange Format. Action is pending and dependant on the NIC handle. Action: 16.22 Milan Sterba (mid March) Solicit contributions to the CDS. Action:17.1 Glenn Kowack Volunteered to write a paper for discussion which would focus on a future funding model for the RIPE NCC. Action: 17.3 Wilfried Woeber Propose a representation address space assignment/reservation status.
