Please note that deliverable 1 of the BETEL project (Demonstrator Specifications) is available via anonymous ftp from dxcoms.cern.ch: /pub/betel/betel-d01.ps (753787 bytes) /pub/betel/betel-d01.ps.Z (266007 bytes) The document is fairly big (70 pages), and was converted to Postscript from Words 5.0 on a Mac. It has also been successfully printed on an Apple Laser Writer printer. BETEL is one of the 4 projets selected in DIVON as a result of the DION call for proposals, and the short summary below has already been posted onto various distribution lists. Olivier, H. Dear Colleagues, Perhaps this message may be of interest to those of you who plan to attend INTEROP Europe 93 in Paris in October. Apologies in advance to those who may receive multiple postings. Birds of a Feather Sessions (BOFs) will provide INTEROP Europe 93 attendees with an opportunity to discuss networking issues in an informal, after hours, atmosphere. These sessions are not intended for formal presentations, and certainly not for vendor product presentations, but rather as a forum for discussions of "unsolved problems". BOFs are open to all INTEROP Europe 93 attendees, including Exhibition attendees, and no special registration is necessary. Examples of some BOF topics from INTEROP Spring 92 in Washington DC include: o Building Network Management Solutions o Commercial Internet Implementations o Very Fast Networks (150-1000 Mbps) o Networked Multimedia Systems o Resource Location o Harvard Performance Tests - Spring 1992: FDDI and Token Ring o Social and Political Issues on the Electronic Frontier o CERT Status To suggest a topic for a BOF at INTEROP Europe 93 in Paris, or to propose that you moderate a BOF session, please send a 50 word abstract to Dennis Jennings at Interop Europe - either fax your abstract to +353-1-904845, or send an e-mail message to DJennings(a)Interop.Com. C A L L F O R P A P E R S - C O N T I N U O U S - COMPUTER NETWORKS FOR RESEARCH IN EUROPE is a new, joint publication by RARE and EARN. It will be published as a quarterly supplement to the Elsevier North-Holland journal "Computer Networks and ISDN Systems". The editorial board consists of high-level representatives from national and international research networking organizations and is chaired by Tomaz Kalin, RARE Secretary-General and Paul Bryant, EARN Secretary-General. The colofon reads as follows: "Scope COMPUTER NETWORKS for RESEARCH in EUROPE is a publication vehicle for coverage of topics of interest to those involved in the area. The audience includes staff from networking service providers of all sizes as well as application developers, policy makers and representatives of funding bodies, advanced user groups and standards organizations. Subject coverage Material on aspects of design, implementation, use and management of computer networks for reseach and education. Specifically included are non-technical topics related to economic, legal and regulatory issues and social impact of using network services in the research and education community. In addition, both RARE (Reseaux Associes pour la Recherche Europeenne) and EARN (European Academic and Research Network) report on developments in their organizations. Types of contributions considered The purpose of the journal is to publish complete papers covering a specific topic or project of practical use to interested readers. The journal is meant to be a source of information on all aspects of computer networks for research and education and will also include news items in addition to the regular contributions discussed above." - Submission of material - Preferred format for submitting papers: RTF or ascii text (+ separate graphs and tables). RIPE NCC review

Dear Colleagues, at the last RIPE meeting we decided that a review of the first year of operations of the RIPE NCC should take place. It was also decided that the review panel would initially consist of: o the RIPE Chairs o the RIPE WG Chairs o the RIPE NCC Manager The review is open to any RIPE participant, but the above mentioned persons are explicitly tasked to do some work. The work will consist in evaluating the first 12 months of operations of the RIPE NCC. In order to do this in a structured way, the following documents serve as mandatory reading material: o ripe-35 RIPE NCC Activity Plan o ripe-62 RIPE NCC Quarterly report Issue 1 o ripe-73 RIPE NCC Quarterly report Issue 2 o ripe-79 RIPE NCC Quarterly report Issue 3 o ripe-87 RIPE NCC Quarterly report Issue 4 The result of this exercise will be a report stating o which activities have been succesfully implemented o which activities are behind schedule o which activities have been taken up, though they were not foreseen in the original activity plan o conclusions The intended time schedule for this work is to have a report ready by the end of June. Amsterdam IETF Social Event update

Registrations for the Trainride through The Netherlands have been overwhelming. Fortunately we managed to get an additional coach on the Train, so we can accomodate 225 people. Digital Equipment Netherlands has acted on this as an additional sponsor to SURFnet bv and RARE. The first 225 people to register have had a confirmation by now. We have a waiting list of max. 40 people who are allowed to fill in places that have not been occupied (i.e. people who have not picked up their tickets) by noon 12th july (monday).
