Mike, I take your point ref: the differences between AFS sharing v. FTP access. And yes, I think members of RIPE are aware of the potential savings esp. here in Europe where bandwidth tends to be very expensive. Then there is also the matter of educating end users - that would also help and I feel we've not done a great job of it. In such an environment there isn't much widespread sharing - most files are accessed by one or a handful of users working on a project together, as opposed to thousands of sites retrieving the same popular FTP files. Hank Nussbacher just sent me figures from the April Internet Hunt results, indicating that Switzerland, Denmark and Finland each sent more data into the NSF backbone than they retrieved from it. The figures weren't broken down by service, but I suspect this is because of FTP. If any network admins in Europe have more information on this, I would be interested in hearing. It sounds like an ideal opportunity to cache FTP traffic. FYI, Peter Danzig, Rick Hall, and I recently completed a study about FTP caching, showing that reasonable sized caches placed at network entry points could reduce FTP traffic by 42%. It's sort of "common knowledge" that the traffic out of Finland is always a lot more than traffic to Finland, and indeed this is due to the ftp archives they have there. So I would say that we do have an excellent cache in Europe (Finland). See pub/zone/iso-country-codes on ftp.nisc.sri.com. Why do only 28% of the advertised hosts answer a ping? Many advertised hosts are behind firewalls that only allow email to get through. Technically, they would not be considered hosts that are directly on the Internet. Some pings are probably lost due to links being down, and/or problems with the pinging process. The house has a rich history, dating from 1671, and is furnished in the original style of the time. The master painter Ferdinand Bol was the first occupant, and later it was occupied by the van Loon family, who still live in part of the house today. The largest part however, is used as a museum. Before the dinner there will be a guided tour of the house, which is situated in the heart of Amsterdam on one of the most beautiful canals.
