Login with username "anonymous" supplying your email address as the password. After logging in, type "cd ripe/docs/" followed by the command "get filename". The relevant filenames for this document are: ripe-131.txt for the ASCII version ripe-131.ps for the PostScript version Electronic Mail Retrieval of Documents -------------------------------------- Documents can also be retrieved from the RIPE document store using a mail server program. For more information on how to use the program, send email to: mail-server(a)ripe.net with "send HELP" in the body text. RIPE NCC Interactive Information Server --------------------------------------- Type "telnet info.ripe.net". This is a menu driven service allows the document store to be browsed. After reading documents you are prompted as to whether you would like to receive an email copy of the document you have just read. If you would, you simply enter your email address and the document will be mailed to you. Below are details of alternative methods of access. NCC seeks Business Manager

Dear colleagues, it has turned out to be impossible for all practical purposes to find suitable candidates for deputy NCC manager with a solid Internet service provision background. With hindsight this is of course not surprising given the current demand for such people. On suggestion of the contributors committee we have therefore decided to look for a business manager who will take responsibility for the business aspects of running the NCC. This will allow the NCC manager (me) to concentrate more on the technical aspects of the work. As you can imagine I am quite keen to have this person on board as soon as possible. Could you please be so kind and give the advert below the appropriate circulation and point good people to it. Thank you very much Daniel Karrenberg RIPE: Coordinating the Internet in Europe. The RIPE Network Coordination Centre provides coordination services to all European Internet service providers. Due to the continuing explosive growth of the European Internet there is an immediate opening at the RIPE NCC for a Business Manager Duties The business manager will be responsible for NCC finances, reporting, general customer relations and some specific services. The business manager will be closely involved in planning, budgeting, hiring personnel and the development of new projects and services. The specific responsibilities of the business manager include: o the Quarterly RIPE NCC Reports o the Annual Report o budgetary control o customer billing o customer training programme o support the NCC manager in planning and budgeting o identify the need for and plan new projects and services Essential Qualifications o work experience in an international environment o experience with financial controls o very good knowledge of written and spoken English o good communication skills o ability to learn and use Unix and X-windows based computer tools Desirable Qualifications o experience in Internet service provision The position provides an excellent opportunity to work at the very heart of the European Internet industry. R I P E RIPE (Reseaux IP Europeens) is a collaborative organisation open to all European Internet service providers. The objective of RIPE is to ensure the necessary administrative and technical coordination to allow the operation of a pan- European IP network. RIPE does not operate a network of its own. RIPE has been functioning since 1989. The result of the RIPE coordination effort is that the individual end-user is presented on his desk top with a uniform IP service irrespective of the particular network his or her computer is attached to. R I P E N C C The RIPE Network Coordination Centre providers coordination services to European Internet service provider. The NCC's widely recognised neutrality and impartiality are a key requirement for its success. The NCC also supports RIPE activities where appropriate. For more information about NCC services and activities see the RIPE document store. The NCC is funded by all Internet service providers in Europe who operate local Internet registries. The RIPE NCC currently employs eight staff (1 part time). NCC staff are formally employed by TERENA. TERENA TERENA is the European Association of research networking organisations and their users. TERENA has been created by a merger of the RARE and EARN associations. TERENA carries out technical activities and provides a platform for discussion and education to encourage the development of a high-quality computer networking infrastructure for the European research community. Conditions RIPE NCC personnel is employed by the TERENA association under their standard employment conditions. The salary will be compatible with a managerial position with significant responsibilities and depend on qualifications and experience. Costs of relocation to the Netherlands will be fully met. The appointment will be for one year with possible extension. Location The RIPE NCC is located at the Scientific Center Watergraafsmeer (WCW) in Amsterdam. The offices are situated at NIKHEF, the Dutch National Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics. The most exciting network conference in the Nordic countries is this year in Copenhagen. NORDUnet provides you with information about what is happening and the development of the net. Almost 40 speakers have been invited for giving presentations, and Vint Cerf, (one of the originators of TCP/IP) will be giving his vision on the future of the Internet. There will be two parallel tracts: on network Security and on network Applications. You don't have to be a specialist to participate. AT&T chief strategist Dick Bodman warned governments that interference would deter business and `slow down a magnet of creative activity by companies and individuals who are providing a catalyst for huge changes within the communications industry'. Bodman, speaking at the Telecoms 95 Exhibition in Geneva, referred to a variety of pressures building up at government and intergovernmental level. These include moves to impose conditions on companies seeking to provide Internet services, to specify common technology standards that would prevent new competitors from entering the market or coming up with new ideas, and to grant exclusive franchises to some companies to operate on world networks unfettered by competition. Bodman concedes that while pornography remains a real problem, commercial and other security issues could be worked out through co-operation between private firms. Even when it comes to such questions as pornography, Bodman believes that the solution probably lies in allowing consumers an option of "blanking out" what they do not want to see. `The Internet and related networks came about because people found an unregulated way to swap information and come up with new ideas without recourse to the authorities. To that extent, the Internet is an expression of the people,' he says." RIPE22: terminal room

Terminal-room facilities during the RIPE-meeting. ------------------------------------------------- Time allowing, we will provide a terminal room during the RIPE meeting. There will be a number of ASCII terminals connected to a terminal-server (hef-ts1.nikhef.nl or hef-ts2.nikhef.nl), which will allow for telnet access. We will also provide ethernet tap points for laptop computers, using 10baseT ethernet. Unfortunately, Apple localtalk access cannot be provided, sorry. If 10base2, AUI or 110V is required, please send mail to <ncc(a)ripe.net> b e f o r e thuesday. If time allows, I will try to bring up an experimental DHCP server. In any case, a limited number of static IP addresses will be available & can be applied for at the registration desk. People that need to have access lists changed should allow access from 192.16.199.0/24 and 192.16.192.0/24. Printer access will be provided via an uuencoded-file-via-mail gateway. ISOC has a (small) presence at the massive Telecom'95 exhibition being held right now in Geneva - in fact I and a group of volunteers from the newly formed ISOC Geneva Chapter are running the ISOC stand in the exhibition. I will see if I can get this matter raised, at least in question-times and maybe other contacts, with some people that may be able to help. In particular there is a weekend sub-conference called "Internet@Telecom'95" tomorrow and Sunday which would be a good forum. By the way, it would be nice if ISOC had more European Chapters - so far only Geneva, Norway, Israel and Catalonia have formed anything. Our influence in Europe depends on our presence. Where are the big countries in all this? Ben
