Community consensus on RIPE NCC staff participation in RIPE

Dear Colleagues, I am glad to declare RIPE community consensus on draft v2 [[1][]] of the document on RIPE NCC staff participation in RIPE. I expect that the text of this draft will be published as a RIPE document in the near future, after final editing to add acknowledgements, check spelling and terminology, and make whatever other minor changes may be needed to prepare it for release. I should like to add a few remarks. Last call on this draft was re-opened on 21 July 2023 [[2][]], and closed on 4 September 2023. During this second last-call period, there were a number of expressions of support, and none of objection, to the two principles enunciated in this draft. In addition, on 2 August 2023, Andy Davidson maintained [[3][]], > As a responsible community, it is incumbent upon us to safeguard NCC > staff from potential conflicts of interest by defining clear > protocols for how such situations are considered and managed when > NCC staff participate in RIPE activities with activity plans, > budgets, or hiring decisions. He also asked, > Can this be captured in the lovely > succinct way that you have approached the first two drafts? At the time, I replied that I hoped so. On reflection, I believe that the initiative for addressing Andy's concerns is best left to RIPE NCC management and staff. Pragmatically, they have well-established internal mechanisms which would likely not run more smoothly if the community were to try to orchestrate them. Diplomatically, the community should avoid telling NCC management and staff what is good for them. Moreover, I have been made aware that the RIPE NCC is planning to review its internal guidelines on staff interaction with the community, and needs to know the consensus of the community in order to inform that review. For all these reasons, I believe it is appropriate to declare consensus on this document now, rather than to attempt improving it further. Finally, I wish to thank everyone who has participated in discussing this draft and its predecessor. Nominations solicited: 2023 Rob Blokzijl Award

Dear all - Now that summer break and vacation time are nearing their end and many of you have already returned to work or will do so soon, I would like to take the opportunity to make you aware that the nomination phase for the Rob Blokzijl Award is now open. It is to be awarded in November at the RIPE 87 meeting in Rome to an individual who has made an outstanding technical or operational contribution to Internet development in the RIPE region. Ideally, the person has also enabled and supported third parties in this regard. Last Call for Draft: NRO NC Election Process (v3)

Dear colleagues, Since version 2 of the Number Resource Organization Number Council (NRO NC) Election Document was published [1], we received one suggestion for clarification. No other concerns or comments were submitted. Following this suggestion, we changed “last ” to “previous” in the following sentence: "Have attended (registered and checked-in for) at least one out of the previous eight RIPE Meetings." This is therefore a LAST CALL for comments for the final version of this document [2], to expire on Monday, 23 October at 06:00 UTC. Results of the RIPE NCC Survey 2023 Now Available

Dear all, The report on the RIPE NCC Survey 2023 is now available: https://www.ripe.net/survey The results of the survey give us an excellent overview of what our members and community think about important issues, and they will help us to improve our services and shape our strategy for the years ahead. The survey ran from May-June this year and was conducted by Survey Matters to ensure independent analysis and anonymity for respondents. 3,899 people from 93 countries answered 50 questions in ten languages, leaving over 12,000 detailed comments. Apart from guiding our work, the results can give members insights on their own work and the development of the Internet more generally. This was a fantastic response that reflects the diversity within our community. I would like to thank all of you who participated in the survey and shared your feedback on how we can improve. Survey Matters will present the results at the upcoming RIPE 87 Meeting in Rome. Soon after, we will publish a list of key findings that we will work on in the coming period to address the issues that were raised in the survey. RIPE 87 Call for Local Hubs

Dear colleagues, We want to help people who can't join the next RIPE Meeting in person to participate in a more engaging way. Would you like to set up a space for participants to meet in your city? If yes, organise a Local Hub! Local Hubs are in-person gatherings that take place in parallel to the RIPE Meeting. They allow registered participants to watch the webcast of the RIPE Meeting, follow the discussions and participate online via chat, audio, or video. Best of all, they can network with other community members from their country, experience the community spirit, and discuss topics from a local perspective. If you'd like to host one, you can also expand the programme to hold additional debates around topics of the RIPE Meeting of particular interest to the local participants.
