New Statistics Format Released

Dear Colleagues, The RIPE NCC has been working with the other Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) - APNIC, ARIN, and LACNIC - to provide Internet number resource statistics in a common format and location. The RIR Statistic files summarise the current state of Internet number resources, and are intended to provide a snapshot of their status without transactional or historical details. The following changes will be made to the existing statistics files: - Addition of IPv6 allocations - Addition of Early Registry Transfer (ERX) IPv4 networks - Addition of Provider Independent (PI) assignments - MD5 checksum provided for verification - New directory - Minor changes in format The statistics in the new format are available at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/new/ And the statistics in the current format are available at: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/pub/stats/ripencc/ The RIPE NCC will continue to produce the statistics in the current and new format until 5 January 2004. Dear All, Below is the hostcount for October 2003. The table shows an increase since last month of over 460,000 (or 2,3%) to a total of almost 20,300,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The nl domain shows the highest actual increase for October with approximately 90,000 hosts more than in September. Call for volunteers: editorial group to revise "Charging by Local Internet Registries" document

Dear Colleagues, Last month at RIPE 46 the RIPE Address Policy Working Group (AP WG) discussed the RIPE document "Charging by Local Internet Registries" (ripe-152). The document was published in 1996 and describes "charging for services by Internet registries and indicates acceptable practice for such charging". It can be found at: <http://www.ripe.net/ripe/docs/chargingbylirs.html> Particular attention was given to the statement that "registries may charge for their administrative and technical services, they may not charge for name space or address space as such; no unit cost or price tag can be attached to a domain name or to an IP address, public or private." It was agreed that an editorial group of volunteers from the community should be formed discuss the document and suggest changes to its text and content. A mailing list has been created for this discussion. The list is open to anyone wishing to participate.
