Terminal-room facilities during the RIPE-meeting. ------------------------------------------------- Time allowing, we will provide a terminal room during the RIPE meeting. There will be a number of ASCII terminals connected to a terminal-server (hef-ts1.nikhef.nl or hef-ts2.nikhef.nl), which will allow for telnet access. We will also provide ethernet tap points for laptop computers, using 10baseT ethernet. Unfortunately, Apple localtalk access cannot be provided, sorry. If 10base2, AUI or 110V is required, please send mail to <ncc(a)ripe.net> b e f o r e thuesday. If time allows, I will try to bring up an experimental DHCP server. In any case, a limited number of static IP addresses will be available & can be applied for at the registration desk. People that need to have access lists changed should allow access from 192.16.199.0/24 and 192.16.192.0/24. Printer access will be provided via an uuencoded-file-via-mail gateway. ISOC has a (small) presence at the massive Telecom'95 exhibition being held right now in Geneva - in fact I and a group of volunteers from the newly formed ISOC Geneva Chapter are running the ISOC stand in the exhibition. I will see if I can get this matter raised, at least in question-times and maybe other contacts, with some people that may be able to help. In particular there is a weekend sub-conference called "Internet@Telecom'95" tomorrow and Sunday which would be a good forum. By the way, it would be nice if ISOC had more European Chapters - so far only Geneva, Norway, Israel and Catalonia have formed anything. Our influence in Europe depends on our presence. Where are the big countries in all this? Ben

Dear all, There is now also a graphical version of the hostcount available, one file shows the monthly increase and the other the increase per quarter. You can find the files under: ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/hostcount/RIPE-Hostcount-{Mo,Qu}.eps As you have probably already noticed, my previous mail contained a slight but significant error: The zone in the de domain had of course not 65,000 SOA RR's but 65,000 A RR's listed. Dear all, Here is the hostcount for September 1995. The table shows an increase since last month of almost 57,000 (or 3.2%) to a total of over 1,830,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe. This comes to a total increase of 18.1% during the last three months. The UK shows the highest increase for August with more than 17,000 hosts more than in August. The de domain shows a decrease of over 40,000 hosts. The zone that listed 65,000 SOA records and caused a very big increase in the de domain in July has changed again and shows only two hosts. The hostcount can also be found under ftp://ftp.ripe.net/ripe/hostcount. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. You can also take the shuttlebus 66 from the Kruislaan and Linnaeusparkweg intersection as described above. d) Taxi from the airport <> Takes 15 mins and will cost approximately Hfl. 60.00 e) Connections away <> Tram 6, 10 to Leidseplein (now with conductor on tram) Tram 9, 14 to Rembrandtplein and Dam Square (9 goes to Central Station) ==================================================================== Public Transport - how much does it cost and where can I get tickets? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Tickets of 15 strips (`Strippenkaart' costing Hfl. 10.75) can be bought in Post Offices, railway stations and cigarette shops. Tickets of 2 and 3 strips can be bought on the bus or the tram but they are much more expensive. You have to validate the ticket yourself in the metro stations and in the trams (except on lines 4, 6, 7, 10, 12 and 13). In the buses the driver will validate the ticket. Amsterdam is divided into zones: the old city is in zone `Centrum' whereas CWI is in zone `Oost'. You need to count how many zones you will be travelling through (from the centre - CWI is 2 zones) and count up that number of strips on your ticket + 1 extra. So in the above example you will need to stamp the 3rd strip. In case of overflow you stamp the last strip of the first ticket and start counting the remaining strips on the next ticket. Confused? Ask any member of the local organizing committee. Warning: BEWARE of pickpockets in crowded places. --------------------------

Please could those of you who provide IP services in CEE answer the following questions : 1. price of an e-mail subscription (per month, average) 2. price of a dial-up IP connection (per month, average) 3. price of a low speed (9.6) permanent IP connection (per month) 4. price of a 64 Kbit digital line from you to Amsterdam (per month) Please give me prices in dollars, no need to be exact. Your answers will never be directly published, nor will the source of the information be disclosed. They will only serve for comparisons in my study.
