A cursory examination would indicate a mix of factors. Countries with large drops such as fr (-320407), it (-102268) and pt (-19322) still saw increases in their SOA counts. This could be due, as you say, to more name-based virtual hosting, or to more use of NAT, firewalls/private addresses etc. A few countries saw drops in both hosts and SOA records e.g. ru (-88806 hosts, -20199 domains), hu (-18232 hosts, -978 domains). Here we probably have "fluctuations", as zones, for whatever reason, don't get counted this time. It looks like we're seeing the end of the systematic increase in the number of hosts. However, the trend in the number of domains is monotonically upwards; this is probably a better metric of Internet growth than the host count. Regards. Mike

I agree, Simon. We see a lot of (1) in the .ie domain as well and would endorse and widen your plea to apply to all TLDs in the RIPE area. To help in this, RIPE NCC have set up a domain hostcount.ripe.net, which is designed to advertise forward mappings to the hostcount collector in each ccTLD. Thus, for example, ie-collector.hostcount.ripe.net maps to 193.1.193.194, while the reverse mapping is handled locally by the .ie collector (HEAnet in this case). In that way, RIPE NCC authenticates the IP address of their hostcount collectors. The table shows a *decrease* since last month of over 380,000 (or 3.3%) to a total of around 11,250,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The de domain shows the highest increase for September with approximately 35,000 hosts more than in August. About The Visualization of the Internet Topology

Hi my name is Andrea Carmignani, I belong to the network research group of the university of Roma3. We developed a tool, known as Hermes, able to explore the Internet topology. Its based mainly on the information coming from the databases belonging to some Internet Resource Record like RIPE, RADB, VERIO, CABLE & WIRE, ARIN and BELL in addiction to the BGP routing information coming from the Route Projects of the Oregon University. Hermes is able to dynamically explore the Internet Topology, providing a Map representing the As and their interconnections. For any AS present on the map, it can also provide several information like: AS name, Maintainers, Routing Policies, list of the known border Router, list of the routes originated by the AS and the As macro which the AS belongs. We will be grateful if you could give us some feedback on the real utility of this tool and hopefully some suggestion able to improving it. Dear All, below is the hostcount for August 2000. The table shows an *decrease* since last month of around 150,000 (or 1.3%) to a total of approximately 11,625,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The .it domain shows the highest increase for August with approximately 88,000 hosts more than in July. Background information and more statistics are available at http://www.ripe.net/hostcount/ Especially, please see http://www.ripe.net/ripencc/pub-services/stats/hostcount/faq.html#axfr for information about why the hostcount statistics are subject to large fluctuations. For those using any of the hostcount datafiles on the RIPE NCC FTP site: they are now compressed using the bzip2 format. The suffix is now '.bz2'. - Brief Notes on this Hostcount - - lu was reincluded this month, after being absent for a couple of months due to AXFR problems. - fo was not included this month due to AXFR restrictions at the top level. - the January data had to be reused for uk due to problems in switching to a new version of the 'host' tool, and there being no new data since that time.
