Dear All, below is the hostcount for August 2002. The table shows an decrease since last month of over 170,000 (or 1,0%) to a total of almost 16,800,000 hosts in the DNS in Europe and surrounding areas. The "dk" domain shows the highest increase for August with approximately 130,000 hosts more than in July. RIPE NCC Membership Survey

[Apologies for duplicate messages.] Dear members and stakeholders, You may be aware that the RIPE NCC recently announced that we have commissioned KPMG to independently carry out a member and stakeholder survey on our behalf to take place from 1 September to 1 November 2002. The aim of this survey is to gather information from RIPE NCC members and stakeholders to help the RIPE NCC plan and improve its services to the membership. We would therefore like to invite you to participate in this survey by filling out and returning the survey forms to KPMG by 31st October. All responses go directly to KPMG and the source or identity of any input to the survey will remain confidential. The full details regarding this project can be found on our web site at: http://www.ripe.net/survey2002 Here you will find the Members Survey form, the Stakeholder Survey form and information for respondents. John Earls from KPMG will be coordinating this project. He will attend the RIPE 43 Meeting in Rhodes and will be available to discuss the survey with you in further detail. During September and October, John will be visiting a number of cities in the RIPE NCC service region to talk face to face with randomly selected members and stakeholders. In each city he has also scheduled a late afternoon opportunity for an informal discussion open to all members of the RIPE NCC. These open forums will allow those who attend to raise issues that they believe should be considered in the RIPE NCC future planning process. E-mail address masquerading for archived mail messages

Dear Colleagues, [Apologies for duplicate mails] Beginning today, 16 August, the RIPE NCC will implement "e-mail address masquerading" for messages displayed on the web site in the RIPE and the RIPE NCC mailing list archives. E-mail masquerading makes it more difficult for spammers to harvest e-mail addresses from the mailing list archives. When masquerading is applied, the e-mail address of the sender will be hidden in the mail archived messages. Those reading archived mail will see a return e-mail address that appears as "<somebody@localhost>". When clicking on this e-mail address, the address of the original sender will be loaded in your mail program, enabling you to send a message to the author. The RIPE NCC has chosen to implement this security measure as there have been various complaints from members of the RIPE community that e-mail addresses were being abused by spammers for Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE). By implementing this security measure we anticipate there will be a sharp reduction to address harvesting of archived e-mail addresses. We will be checking for harvesters who manage to overcome this measure and will take further steps if necessary. Dear colleagues, Only a few weeks away from RIPE 43. Rhodes is the location for RIPE 43 and all information on travelling and accommodation can be found on our website www.ripe.net. The agenda for the whole week can also be found on our website. Here is a snapshot of some interesting items: SDU/DNS workshop by Edward Lewis (ARIN): A workshop that covers the issues concerning dynamic update, the advantages and the risks. Setting up dynamic update, securing it, creating and managing keys for updates, and authorization configuration will be covered. The workshop will progress from setting up an unsecured dynamic update zone, securing the zone via TSIG and SIG(0), and using the two different authorization policy statements. Tools to be used are BIND 9.3 (snapshot) servers, rndc, dig, and nsupdate. Presentation by Andy Linton (Lionra): "As Internet backbone connectivity becomes more complex, it becomes more difficult to keep track of peering policies with providers and customers. By specifying routing details using RPSL in the public Internet Routing Registry (IRR) providers can use the information to check consistency and build router configurations".
