RIPE87 Call for Presentations now open!

Dear colleagues, The RIPE Programme Committee (PC) is now seeking content proposals for plenary presentations, lighting talks, tutorials and BoFs at RIPE 87. This meeting will take place in Rome from 27 November - 1 December 2023. RIPE 87 will be a hybrid meeting, so both in-person and remote presentations are encouraged and will be accepted. The deadline to submit a presentation proposal is Monday, 18 September 2023. Proposals submitted after this date will only be considered if there are still time slots available. Sunsetting ENOG

Dear colleagues, ENOG (Eurasian Network Operators' Group) was established in June 2011 as a means to bring RIPE and the RIPE NCC closer to the local communities in Eurasia and to support Internet development in the region. Last year, we indefinitely postponed what would have been the 19th ENOG Meeting, slated to be held in Moscow. In the run up to that decision, we heard from many community members, first at a Birds of a Feather (BoF) session on the future of ENOG at ENOG 19 and subsequently during the BoF at RIPE 85 in Belgrade and on the ENOG Discuss mailing list. I then shared an email to the ENOG Discuss list, outlining the RIPE NCC’s view on the matter [1]. These dialogues highlighted the complexities involved in continuing engagement efforts through ENOG and we appreciate the community’s willingness to have difficult but much needed conversations. In light of these discussions, we believe it is time to dissolve ENOG as a RIPE NCC regional platform. It is in no one’s interest to continue to support a platform that can no longer serve its purpose or deliver meaningful outcomes. If, in the future, the community indicates that there is a constructive role for ENOG to play, we will be open to this discussion. In practical terms, this means that we will archive the ENOG website and sunset the mailing list as of 31 July 2023, after which it will be kept as a read-only site. ENOG Meetings have already ceased to take place, and we will not plan ENOG Meetings for the foreseeable future. We thank everyone who has contributed their time and effort towards ENOG over the past decade. The RIPE NCC remains as committed as ever to supporting the technical communities in our service region. Our focus going forward will be on more localised efforts, whether this is training, workshops, providing staff to speak at events or supporting NOGs. Since our decision to postpone ENOG 19, we have also hosted our first Central Asia Peering and Interconnection Forum meeting in Kazakhstan last year, and the second of these events will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 19-20 September 2023 [2]. We will continue to host smaller events such as RIPE NCC Days and Internet Measurement Days (IMD) in the region that used to be covered by ENOG events, such as the IMD Kyrgyzstan which took place recently. We’ve supported other events including the KZ NOG, Baykal NOG, the Georgia NOG, the Kyrgyzstan IT Forum and the Central Asia, Armenia, Georgia and Moldova Internet Governance Forums (IGFs). We continue to engage with the Ukrainian Internet community through various online initiatives and our staff in Ukraine. We encourage you to take a look at NOGs and other activities taking place within the region [3]. Hi, all! I would like to believe that this "freeze" in RIPE NCC' activities in Russia is connected just with formal issues. And I want to believe that RIPE NCC will try to unite its members (and members of RIPE community) in different ways. Last Call for Draft Document: RIPE NCC Staff Participation in the RIPE Community

Dear colleagues, The deadline for comments for the draft document “RIPE NCC Staff Participation in the RIPE Community” [1] ended. Many thanks for all the comments sent to the RIPE list. There was a lot of support for the document, especially for the principle that RIPE NCC staff are part of the RIPE community. It is great to see that RIPE NCC staff is welcome and valued by community members. There were some suggestions to explicitly allow RIPE staff to take on certain community roles. Other community members disagreed and cautioned that this could lead to conflict of interests. Hans Petter Holen clarified that there are also RIPE NCC internal guidelines for staff. There were no concrete suggestions for changes in the document. I believe that the current version is ready for adoption and publication as a RIPE Document and would like to confirm this. This is therefore a LAST CALL for comments, to expire on Monday 10 July at 06:00 UTC (08:00 Amsterdam time). Unless there are some substantial comments, I look forward to declaring consensus and arranging publication shortly after that. Dear colleagues, my name is Niklas Plugge, I am a network engineer at AS42184 (TKRZ Stadtwerke GmbH) in Germany. I am studying computer science in a bachelor degree beside my work as a network engineer. Within my study, I am currently writing a scientific paper with the title "Digital warfare in times of the Ukraine war – Analysis of the cyberwar on the internet from the perspective of local ISPs". In the paper, I want to explain how ISPs and other internet organizations experience the cyberwar in their daily work and which consequences they face. In my opinion, ISPs and internet organizations get a good overview about the things that happen to the internet-infrastructure, especially during times of war. That is one of the reasons, why I want to highlight their perspectives in this paper. Chris Buckridge Leaving the RIPE NCC

Dear colleagues, After having been such a big part of our organisation and the RIR system for many years, Chris Buckridge will be leaving the RIPE NCC on 30 June. After starting his career with APNIC in Australia, Chris joined the RIPE NCC in 2006 and quickly found his niche in supporting, and later leading, our engagement efforts with governments and regulators across our service region, as well as the various Internet governance forums we participate in. He was promoted to External Relations Manager in 2015 and then Head of External Relations in 2019. Since 2021, Chris has been Advisor to the Managing Director on Global Strategic Engagement, focusing on issues relating to the wider multi-stakeholder governance model, including sanctions, where he developed contacts with governmental officials and created opportunities that helped to support better understanding of the impact of sanctions on the Internet. As many who have crossed paths with him will attest, Chris has been a great ambassador both for the RIPE NCC and the RIPE community during his time here. He played a key role in developing the strong external relations capacity we have at the RIPE NCC, benefiting us and the technical community in many ways. Chris helped to ensure a strong presence at the IGF and EuroDIG communities and made many contributions to these events over the years. He supported our efforts to engage on various EU legislative proposals, ensuring that the role of the multi-stakeholder model, as enshrined in the Tunis Agenda, was recognised in legislation. He also made a meaningful contribution towards work on the IANA Stewardship Transition, which was successfully completed in 2016. Chris is currently serving on the IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG), a position which is independent from the RIPE NCC. As Chris will remain in this role, and will no doubt find new avenues to explore within the Internet governance space, we expect and hope that he will remain a familiar face in the years to come. On behalf of all of us at the RIPE NCC, I wish him the very best. The RIPE NCC’s work in the public policy and Internet governance arena continues as part of the organisation’s external engagement and community activities led by Hisham Ibrahim, our Chief Community Officer.
