2019 IANA Numbering Services Review Committee Report Published

Dear colleagues, The IANA Numbering Services Review Committee (IANA RC) is pleased to announce that it has published the 2019 IANA Numbering Services Review Committee Report. This report follows a 30-day public comment period on the IANA Performance Matrix Summary Report published by the RIRs, seeking input from the broader community. The IANA RC was formed in 2016 and is responsible for publishing an annual report as advice to the NRO EC for its evaluation of the IANA numbering services. The report is based on the 2019 IANA Performance Matrix Summary Report, as well as any input gathered from the global number community. The RIPE NomCom has held its first meeting, received four nominations so far and has established a blog to keep the community informed about its progress. COVID-19 and RIPE NCC-organised Events

Dear all, First and foremost, I want to assure you that the health and safety of our community and our staff is at the top of our thinking as we make our event plans in light of the COVID-19 situation. Our website contains information on the events we organise and we will update this page to inform about relevant updates. And we will of course let the RIPE community and members know of important updates using this mailing list and the lists of other affected communities: https://www.ripe.net/participate/meetings/coronavirus-update Last week, the decision was made in consultation with the Bahraini government and local hosts to postpone the MENOG 20 meeting. This decision was not made lightly, but we feel it was the right decision to make to ensure everyone's safety. If similar decisions need to be made for future events, they will be made in consultation with all relevant parties including the RIPE Chair, local government, hosts, sponsors and organising teams. At the moment, all our upcoming events are scheduled to take place as normal. We understand that this situation could change quickly, and we may be forced to cancel or postpone a meeting at very short notice depending on developments in the host country, in the Netherlands or around the world more generally. And we will not compel organising staff to travel when there might be a risk to their health or to the health of staff in our offices. So giving exact timelines or decision deadlines is difficult to do. There are many considerations with both continuing with events and with postponing them. We have set up internal task forces and consulted health experts to look at issues around COVID-19 generally and, more specifically, at contingency planning for events such as RIPE 80 should they need to be postponed. We do understand the logistical and cost issues at play for people planning to attend RIPE 80 and other events. We will ensure decisions are made in as timely a manner as possible to minimise any costs or disruption to people's plans. We also have a wider social responsiblity to ensure we do not in any way contribute to the problems that COVID-19 has brought about. Again, we will make decisions in consultation with relevant parties but always with the health and safety of staff and community in mind. We hope we will still be able to run a great RIPE 80 Meeting in May, but we do ask you to keep in mind that the situation is changing daily and we are working hard to ensure we are as prepared as possible for any eventuality. RIPE NCC Survey 2019: Key Findings and Action Areas

Dear colleagues, The RIPE NCC Survey was conducted in May and June 2019. 4,161 RIPE NCC members and other interested parties took the time to participate and let us know their views on how the RIPE NCC is performing and the direction it should be taking in the years ahead. We are extremely grateful to all those who took the time to give their input. Survey Matters analysed the data and published a detailed report with the findings from the survey in October 2019. We examined these and we now propose a number of our own key findings and action areas to address the issues raised in the survey. A list of all 36 key findings is available here: https://www.ripe.net/participate/member-support/surveys/ripe-ncc-survey-201… The list provides areas for investigation and we will add the results of those investigations and proposed actions as we develop them. We will also periodically review the list and make adjustments if necessary. In 2020, we will update the webpage with the outcomes of the actions taken by the RIPE NCC in each area. Call for Public Comments on the 2019 IANA Performance Matrix Summary Report

Dear colleagues, As you may be aware, as a result of the successful IANA Stewardship transition in 2016, the IANA Numbering Services are today being managed through an SLA between ICANN and the five RIRs. As part of the result of the IANA Stewardship transition, the IANA Numbering Services Review Committee (IANA RC) was established in 2016. The IANA RC is composed of representatives from each RIR region, and advises and assists the RIRs in the review of the IANA Numbering Services. The IANA services are today provided by Public Technical Identifiers (PTI), which publishes monthly performance reports on the IANA Numbering Services (https://www.iana.org/performance/numbers). Based on these monthly performance reports, the five RIRs have produced the 2019 IANA Performance Matrix Summary Report: https://www.nro.net/wp-content/uploads/2019-RIR-IANA-summary-report.pdf The IANA RC IANA 2019 performance report ----------------------------------- The IANA RC is now launching a public comment period of 30 days, seeking comments and input from the community on the IANA numbering services performance and the 2019 IANA Performance Matrix Summary Report. Tribute to Bill Manning

Dear colleagues, It was with great sadness that we found out about the passing of Bill Manning this weekend. Bill has played a hugely important role in the development of the Internet since the 1970s, and he has had a great impact on the work of the operator community globally. Since he started his work at Texas Instruments and from his time working with Jon Postel at ISI, Bill has been an innovative and charismatic figure in our community. His record of making a positive impact on various groups and communities such as the IETF, RSSAC, ICANN, NANOG, APRICOT and ARIN is a testament to his energy and enthusiasm for the Internet and the people who work in this sphere. He was instrumental in the set-up of AfNOG in Africa when this was a part of our own RIPE community. Bill was a major contributor to work in the DNS field and especially the Internet's root zones, and he operated the B-root server for many years. Daniel Karrenberg, Chief Scientist at the RIPE NCC, notes: "Bill has been a great asset to the operators of the DNS root name servers. He would often contribute original points-of-view and interesting ideas." >From the tributes to Bill that we've seen throughout our community, it is clear that this originality and constant ability to bring interesting ideas and good humour to his work will be remembered.
