Hi, The organisers of the first European IETF like to get a feel for the number of European participants that will show up. I know that Ripe intents to meet at the IETF, still I like some indication. Could you please reply to ME (not the list) and say wheter YES you will probably attent or NO you will probably not attent the IETF (probably but not yet 100% fixed: Amsterdam second week of july 1993). The increase in UK figures you saw may not be due to the method of collection, but rather a real effect. Our own figures showed a substantial increase this month -- about 4,200 "real" hosts. (Our accounting of "real" hosts is always a bit more conservative than yours -- we identified 40636 this month, rather than the 43301 you saw. This is possibly because we have a better (local) understanding of what constitutes a duplicate?) We still have a considerable number of JIPS sites that have not yet delegated so I guess we'll carry on growing for a while yet... Regards, Bob Day

Folks, hostcount time once more. Comments: - This was the first time that some countries were counted not at the NCC, but within the country. The UK and DE have been counted by ULCC and DE-NIC, and the output collected at the NCC. As you will see, this has increased counts for both countries quite significantly, especially the UK. If anyone besides these two is interested to do the hostcount for their country, please send me a message. (One per country please ....) - All went up nicely, except for GR. I have tried GR once extra, but no improvements were made. Total increase just over 22,000. - Total is now over 254,000, which is roughly 22 percent of the global count, taken from the October zone survey done by Mark Lottor of SRI. Database WG has mailing list

Since there are quite some work items pending regarding the database a good deal of traffic is expected in the next few days. RIPE NCC Quarterly Report Issue 2 Available

The second Quarterly Report of the RIPE NCC is now available. It can be fetched from the RIPE document store as document ripe-73 in both PostScript and plain ASCII. RIPE documents can be found in directory ripe/docs/ripe-docs. The differences with the draft which was distributed at the RIPE meeting are minor. Most notable are additional graphics in Appendix H. As usual the NCC welcomes comments and suggestions.

How to get a free EMPB connection to your network

EMPB are offering their customers a network with guareanteed quality of service (well 200kb/s on a 2m link). Any one that buys a EMPB connection to his workstation, needs to asure that this connection, actually makes the IP arcitecture as a whole fully functional. This means that EMPB has to provide connectivity to all nameservers as an example. If EMPB connects through something that has no quality of service guarantees at all, the quality of the FUNCTIONALTY provided is the sum of the transit networks. So I suggest that all regional/RBS etc networks in the world choices to offer the EMPB providor to connect to them locally, at the expences of EMPB, so that EMPB customers can reach a particular RBS-region through EMPB controled paths. Otherwice it would be really hard for the EMPB providor to live up to any of the guarantees for quality of service, if they relay on such a thing as the unreliable Ebone. For those wo don't follow me, here is a summary; If you want a free EMPB connection, so that EMPB customers can talk to you, just excercice the right of implementing your policy in the RBS, and offer EMPB a free ethernet connector on your central routers. -Peter If you talk to EMPB through the Ebone, you are using your resources to subsidise the EMPB providor.
