Given the cost of international high-speed circuits (see below) and the fact that the current bandwidth is not exhausted yet, upgrading for the sake of upgrading is not very wise. In some cases this doesn't make sense since ACONEt is RNMR> hooked up to DFN who have to share this with other networks... I'd like to qualify that statement: the problem is not with price/ availability of _national_ circuits, but _international_ circuits out of certain (many) countries. Also, there is a cost distribution model within TEN-34, so the cost of _backbone_ (i.e. shared) lines is shared amongst all the participants. I though I did mention this, but given the short preparation time I had it may not have been a very clear story. RNMR> Rob Blokzijl: Too little, too late. Sure, there are high speed islands all over Europe, many NRNs have a high speed national infrastructure. The problem is getting a *pan-European* high-speed network. TLD BoF report (Nial O'Reilly): 5.1 agenda reenigineered during meeting it was recognised that general things need to be clarified first: - - what should BoF be doing? - - what should WG be doing? - - what kind of cooperation of TLD admins in the RIPE community can and should be done? - - should we also discuss gTLD's? As result of this discussion it was decided to form a committee to produce terms of reference (on the committee are Marcel Schneider, Lars Johan Limann, Willi Black, Nial O'Reilly) Rob Blokzijl proposed to open a new WG with Nial O'Reilly as chairman; noone objected, everyone welcomed the WG During second half of BoF mainly two issues were discussed: 5.2.1 position of IANA concerned with 4 issues related to IANA: - funding - authority - legal protection - recognition of authority and importance of IANA (it is recognised by the Internet community, but not yet by governmental authorities) 5.2.2 reaction on IAHC, IPOC IPOC process needs to be visible to outside world, also to people who did not sign the MoU - we need to be involved in IPOC process: - 29th meeting in Brussel between respresentatives of EC and IPOC - next day hopefully meeting between IPOC and new WG representativs - some people from WG intend to participate in the WIPO meeting in Geneva Christopher Wilkinson from DG13 in EC welcomed RIPE to this new WG Wilfried Woeber: will you discuss issue of property of names? Peter Lothberg: What is the relation between RIPE and the EC? What conclusion will EC take home from this meeting? Rob Blokzijl: open platform, everybody is welcomed hopes, first contact is created to further discuss Internet issues Christopher Williamson: RIPE members have trained EC quite a lot, is not an exclusive EC thing, discussion are also done with US or other organisations and ISPs, there is program to support Internet developments There is still a lot to learn, it would be great if one or two from RIPE could come and give a quick inventory for the EC about what kind of WGs exist, what is discussed where (action point for Rob to appoint people to do this?) 6. I apologise for what might appear like duplication but I have been informed (thanks to those that told me) that this mail was not sent out in a readable form this afternoon. Therefore to ensure that everybody has a readable version here is this afternoon's mail once more. Dear contributors, As stated in the mail from karel Vietsch, dated 01 September 1997, the received nominations of people to serve on the for the RNA Executive Board will be published on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd of September. In accordance with this these are the nominations received as of 15th September: ----------------------------------------------------- Name: Frode Greisen Affiliation: Ebone A/S (Ebone Inc.) Function: Managing Director History of involvement with European Internet and RIPE NCC: ----------------------------------------------------------- Frode Greisen is managing director of Ebone Inc. which provides a European IP backbone connecting 78 Internet Service Providers in 30 countries. He has worked with computers since 1963 and with computer networks since 1984. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society since 1992 and served as its treasurer until he was elected chairman of the Society in 1997. He was the president of the European Research and Education Network (EARN) from 1989 to 1995. EARN was an early supporter of the RIPE NCC and provided a substantial part of its funding until the present system with user payment was set up. At the merger between EARN and Reseaux Associee de la Recherche Europeenne (RARE) in October 1994 into the Trans-European Education and Research Networking Association (TERENA) he was elected president of TERENA and he served in that position until May 1995. Frode Greisen was born in 1940 and obtained his M.Sc. in electrical engineering in 1964 and a Ph.D. in solid state physics in 1968 from the Technical University of Denmark. He was at the Technical University of Denmark first as a research assistant and later as an assistant professor from 1964 to 1970, with IBM Denmark from 1971 to 1977 and with the Danish Computing Center for Research and Education from 1978 to 1996. He was acting part time as general manager for the Ebone consortium from 1992 to 1996 when the Ebone Association and the Ebone company were established and he joined the company as a full time employee in 1996. Position and goals regarding the RIPE NCC ----------------------------------------- The RIPE NCC should maintain its neutral position while continuing to provide high quality services to its users. It should be sensitive to user needs but only get involved with activities where the neutrality can be preserved and where it does not unduly compete with its users. The RIPE NCC should be involved in the world wide policies for IP number administration and make sure its user's interests are considered as this administration, including the IANA, is developing. # - # - # As of this date Frode Greisen is the still the only nomination. There is still plenty of time to nominate other candidates and for those that wish to do so I have appended the original mail and nomination template for your use. The EB governs the RIPE NCC and is * responsible to the members. It consists of 3-5 people. Anyone can serve * on the EB except employees of RNA. * * We are now at a stage where we need to find the constituting EB. Normally * the EB will be elected by the RNA members. Since there are no RNA members * yet, the appropriate group to bootstrap this process is the RIPE NCC * Contributors Committee.
