[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear Colleagues, The nomination period for appointment to the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number Council (NC) has now closed. This year, in accordance with the Number Resource Organization's Memorandum of Understanding (NRO MoU), the RIPE community will elect one individual to fill the seat that is being vacated by Dave Wilson, who was elected to a three-year term on the NRO NC that began on 1 January 2007. The following candidates have accepted their nomination for the vacant seat on the NRO NC from the RIPE NCC service region: - Dave Wilson The representative elected to the NRO NC seat will serve a three-year term, beginning 1 January 2010. RIPE NCC General Meeting October 2009 - Registration Open

Dear RIPE NCC member, The RIPE NCC Executive Board is pleased to invite you to the RIPE NCC Autumn General Meeting (GM) 2009. The GM will be held on Wednesday, 7 October 2009 from 16:00 - 20:00. It will be held adjacent to the RIPE 59 Meeting, which takes place from 5-9 October 2009 at the Corinthia Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal. The GM will consist of two parts: - The RIPE NCC Services Working Group will begin at 16:00 and will include the presentation of the Report from the RIPE NCC. This part of the GM is open to everyone. - The second part of the GM follows immediately after and is only open to RIPE NCC members who have registered for the GM. This part of the meeting is the forum where RIPE NCC members can discuss the operations and activities of the RIPE NCC and exercise their voting rights. More information about the GM is available at: https://www.ripe.net/membership/gm/gm-october2009/ REGISTRATION ------------ You must register for the GM separately from the RIPE 59 Meeting. As a member you can attend both the RIPE NCC Services Working Group session and the members-only section of the GM without being registered for RIPE 59. See below for further information on the RIPE NCC Services Working Group session. In the event that your organisation is to be represented by a director or an authorised employee, the registration form should state the name(s) of the employee(s) or director(s). If more than one authorised person is to attend the GM, please specify on the registration form who is allowed to exercise the voting rights. If your organisation is to be represented by a third party, not being an authorised employee or director, please fill out the proxy form and send it to us by 23 September 2009. Any proxy sent to us after this date will not be valid. The proxy form is available to download here: https://www.ripe.net/membership/gm/gm-october2009/proxy.html Report from the RIPE NCC ------------------------ The Report from the RIPE NCC presentation will be given during the RIPE NCC Services Working Group session during RIPE 59, which constitutes the first part of the GM. GM attendees who have not registered for the RIPE Meeting are welcome to participate in this working group session. This takes place on Wednesday, 7 October 2009 from 16:00 - 17:30, immediately before the members-only section of the GM. The Report from the RIPE NCC presentation will not be repeated in the members-only section of the GM. Voting and Resolutions ---------------------- Candidate members are welcome to attend the GM but are not permitted to vote according to article 16.7 of the RIPE NCC Articles of Association. Full members who are not able to attend the GM but still want to vote can do so by means of proxy voting as per article 16. Please also note that the GM can only pass resolutions that have been submitted and published according to article 15 of the RIPE NCC Articles of Association. LIR Portal Downtime: Incident Report

Dear Colleagues, LIR Portal service has now been restored. The LIR Portal, along with several other RIPE NCC online services, was unavailable from 06:30 - 08:30 (UTC), 9 September 2009. The outage was caused by a faulty switch. We have performed emergency patching to fix the problem for now. A replacement switch will be installed this afternoon between 15:00 - 16:00 (UTC). A five-minute interruption to service is expected when we make this change. We apologise for the inconvience this may have caused for you. We are currently working on a project to migrate the LIR Portal to a new architecture, with improved redundancy, which, when implemented, will reduce the likelihood of such events. The cause of the outage is not yet known, though it is not related to service outage that occurred yesterday. We will provide further details once the issue has been resolved. Unplanned LIR Portal Downtime: Incident Report

Dear Colleagues, This is a follow-up to the earlier message regarding the LIR Portal service outage that occurred earlier today. Further investigation into the loss of service has revealed that the downtime actually started at 21:15 (UTC), Monday, 7 September. The outage was caused by a configuration error of the Apache web server. The RIPE NCC has strict upgrade procedures that our staff follow to prevent this, but they do leave some room for human error, and this outage was the result of such an error. To minimise the chance of this happening again, we plan to include automated monitoring of our Apache configuration syntax to our monitoring system. A separate issue was responsible for the longer than usual time it took to recognise and fix the problem. Our monitoring system is set up to send text messages to a 24/7 engineer in case of outages such as this. From our logs, we can see that the system did indeed try to send an SMS about the outage yesterday at 21:15 (UTC), but was unable to connect to our mobile service provider. To minimise the chance of this happening again, we will reconfigure our monitoring system to fall back to another provider in case a message can not be sent out. Reminder: NRO NC Call for Nominations - RIPE NCC Service Region

[Apologies for duplicate emails] Dear Colleagues, This is a reminder that the RIPE NCC has issued a call for nominations from the RIPE NCC service region to fill one vacant seat on the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Number council (NC). The term of Dave Wilson, who was elected to the NRO NC in January 2007, ends on 31 December 2009. The election to the NRO NC seat will take place during a Plenary session at the RIPE 59 Meeting to be held in Lisbon, Portugal from 5-9 October 2009. All members of the Internet community who are present at the Plenary session may vote in the election. The deadline for nominations is 9 September 2009. Any individual residing within the RIPE NCC service region is eligible for nomination, except Regional Internet Registry (RIR) staff members. Self-nominations are permitted. Please send your nominations to by 23:00 UTC on 9 September 2009. All confirmed nominations will be listed on the RIPE NCC website by 11 September 2009. All nominees may submit a written statement in support of their nomination for publication on the RIPE NCC website.
